Ignorance and irrational brand loyalty to something else.

In my experience, they seem to have a fear of water.

I have a SW Mercury and have zero complaints about it. It is a carbuerated 1998 150 hp. Always starts, alarm never goes off, always gets me home

They aren't a big fan of irony from what I hear.

I have wondered this as well....until about a year ago, I saw 4 300 Verados on the floor in a buddy's shop- they were almost new. He said they came off of 2 workboats and were already "burned up"....whatever that means.
Claimed the Yamaha reliability was much better in their application

Saltwater (mainly offshore) engines have to be reliable enough to run for 36-48 hours straight while you're 120 miles offshore

if it isn't overpriced, and it runs, we like them
stickers don't matter

Seems like most of the manufacturers prefer Yamaha also. Suzuki is underrated BTW.

Thanks for scaring me with my Merc. Its a 05 Opitimax. Got around 100 hours on it, I guess I didn't run it enough to have problems.
It runs pretty good.

I have never had much trouble with mercury outboards. My grand pa and dad would only use them. Only other outboard i have owned was a tohatsu and that damn thing was near indestructible.

Always heard great things about Yamaha as far as reliability. So imagine my confusion when I kept hearing of my agency having to get motors fixed on their boats. Finally figured out the issue one day when I say exactly what was going on. Fella driving the boat in reverse while dragging for a body and only one blade from the prop was hitting the water at a time and not a drop coming out the pisser

Brand loyalty in boat motors is as bad as it is with truck mfgr. It's always been this way. Years ago, Mercury-Evinrude was the boating equivalent of Ford-Chevy..

Late bump, but he's my take on it.
Saltwater fishermen need their boats to go longer distances and handle tougher conditions. Freshwater fishmen are generally in a much smaller size of water, and it's not going to be nearly as rough. So it comes down to what engine can handle the pressue the longest? I don't think there is anything wrong with Merc's, although I don't own one, I believe it's more to do with the support we have around to fix the others.
