re: The fake FG brings a smile to my face

i've turned on TV four times to catch replay of game and turned it on right before that play every time. I laugh out loud every single time. The look on the face of AA Vernon Hargreaves of Florida has to be priceless though not visible... What was really impressive was the way the two LSU guys went down field to block...

What is the actual rule? My brothers and I were discussing... the holder can pass it from his knee obviously but I heard if it's a botched snap (not an intentional fake FG) then holder has to stand up to pass. Is this correct?
As long as a kicker was in position to kick the ball, the holder can throw from his knees. I'm sure a botched snap works the same way.
quote:
In NCAA Rule 4, section 1: ARTICLE 3. A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle or declare it dead: [...] b. When any part of the ball carrier’s body, except his hand or foot, touches the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his body, except his hand or foot [Exception: The ball remains alive when an offensive player has simulated a kick or at the snap is in position to kick the ball held for a place kick by a teammate. The ball may be kicked, passed or advanced by rule]

Me too, but it really wasn't a smart call under the circumstances was it?
- Les said it was executed perfectly in practice, and the team sold him on it
- They probably watched film of Florida on field goals and saw how aggressively they went for the block on the left side (Les said it was specific for Florida)
- Even with the bobble he made it to the endzone untouched
- We won
I'd say it was the right call.

I think using it on 4th and 13 was a major risk. It was probably more suitable for around 4th and 3.
Might be more risky on 4th and 3 because it's more expected
The play was designed to get about 20 yards if the deception worked. And it did.

The fact it was 4th and 13 is exactly why Les did it. He knew Florida would be aggressive and go all out for the block because the last thing they expected was a fake in that situation. The fake only works if Florida is agressive. If it's 4th and short, Florida would have played it safe.

If you think about it, the best angle to attempt the block would be the side we ran the fake towards.
The other guys were playing for the old FG fake, not the 2015 version.

The most important part of the play to me was that Les put trust in his players & did not go conservative. This play built trust both ways & will help us in games to come, hopefully.

I also enjoy the fact that our kicker didn't get caught from behind by VHIII too. Impressive. He was just almost in striking distance.

Listen to this podcast from Sports Today 104.5 on 10/19/15 for more detail about the game and the big call. Jimmy Ott gives a sidelines perspective of the game.

He was not applauding the fake field goal nor was he smiling about it. He was clapping because he wasn't trying to motivate his team after that dagger. Watch the clip again. Why on earth people keep saying he smiled and applauded the play is beyond me.

The message he was trying to convey was "it's ok, I have a plan". Would expect no less. Taking it out of context when you watch the replay on ESPN or something sort of skews it.
ETA: watching that gif, if 1 of 3 UF players free for the block had covered the passing lane once they saw Dominque moving left, they probably would have at least stopped a score. ALMOST developed too slow.

Yep.
Watching that play again, how on earth could it NOT work...as long as the ball is on the right hash, and the defense is playing for the block...all the kicker has to do is catch the ball.
It was a great design and a great call.

It was the perfect call under the circumstances.
1. It proves Les trusted his team to execute the play which they did to perfection.
2. It proves he trusts his defense in the unlikely even the fake does not result in a score or first down.
3. It serves notice on our future opponents that Les will call a trick play under just about any circumstance.
I love it.
I especially loved the UF player's reactions.

This was the old Les and i like it....I like it a lot. Dude would get a lot less shite f he would roll the dice a bit more and keep fricking with people's minds like this.
