105.1 in Lafayette is now classic rock

Another nail in the coffin for modern rock radio in south Louisiana. They had a 20+ year run. The odd part about this is that 98.1 comes in loud and clear in Lafayette so now instead of having a monopoly on the younger modern rock listeners, they're competing with 98.1.

More and more stations seem to be abandoning the modern rock or metal format.
I would love to see some data on audiences across various demographics and determine how we can have sustainable stations that play only classical music but none of the other two genres of contemporary music.
Are we supposed to believe that classic rock, AOR, hip-hop, modern country, and the current Billboard hits are the only viable radio formats left in terrestrial radio?
I wouldn't give a shite about classic rock being so prevalent if it wasn't for two reasons:
1) There is still no clearly defined classification of what constitutes as classic rock. Bands don't simply become classic rock after x number of years have passed. Nirvana isn't classic rock. Metallica isn't classic rock. Tool isn't classic rock. Radiohead isn't classic rock. The intermixing of different genres of rock is frustrating enough. John Cougar, Tom Petty, the Cars, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Foreigner, and the Beatles don't necessarily belong on the same station.
2) These stations play the same handful of singles by each artist. When I was a dj for KLSU I went out of my way to play B-sides, live recordings, and rare-releases by various bands. If these stations actually made full use of the artist's discography, then we could have an almost infinite source of music to listen to.
But no. Instead we get the same five songs by REO Speedwagon until the end of time. We have entire classic albums which are glossed over and never heard from. Seriously, when is the last time that you heard a track from AC/DC's Powerage on a terrestrial "classic rock" station?

Apparently not since all these stations keep switching formats.

There are 2 companies that control 90% of terrestrial radio. One of them is CBS. They determine what is popular, and 10 years ago, they said new rock was out and country was in. Since then, they have been eliminating virtually all rock stations and largely quit playing rock in advertisements and tv shows. It's functionally dead, guys. Sucks, but true. They know how to market products to classic rock listeners and country listeners, but they don't know how to monitize new rock and roll, so it's being done away with.
Thank goodness for the internet. Young people use that more than fm anyways.

I worked for Clear Channel Radio/iHeart Media. If there was ever a company that gave a metaphorical "frick you" to rock and metal fans, it's that one.
Clear Channel in Baton Rouge had one half-arse effort to please rock fans...97.7 (Downtown Radio). However, it's nothing more than AOR and various songs from the '60s and '70s. It's not a terrible station, but it only furthers the mediocrity that is Eagle 98.1 and their putrid programming.

Back when 93.7 first started in Baton Rouge they got great ratings. They had a request show in the afternoon that actually played Megadeth, Slayer, and a few other bands you never hear on the radio. They switched to 70s soft rock because the ads sold for more money, even with worse ratings. That format bombed and they went back to modern rock, though a slightly neutered version of what they were before.

If I had to guess, it's roughly defined as mid/late 60s to early/mid 90s.
Could be wrong that but that's pretty much what I hear when I listen.
But that's the main reason I stay with XM. The genres are much more clearly defined and I can swap to pretty much whatever I'm in the mood for that day.

It's gone. 97.7 is talk radio now.
93.7 was bought by a bible network.
It's insane.

You can get almost any radio station on your phone through an app. I'd recommend downloading KLSU and KUTX apps if you want an eclectic mix of music from a terrestrial radio station.

But that's only a recent transition. Ten years ago, you never heard any music from the '90s on a classic rock station. Now, all of the sudden radio executives are seeking to capitalize on nostalgia among Generation Xers and think that grunge, alternative rock, and metal fit with classic rock.

I'd swear off terrestrial radio if my car had an input jack.

I distinctly remember 93.7 starting out around 2004 or so. I was so frickin' stoked because it sounded nothing like any other station in south Louisiana.
For the first two years it was the shite.

Yep, I heard so many bands and songs for the first time on that station:
Iron maiden, Bullet for my Valentine, Slayer, Megadeath, Avenged Sevenfold. It was great having them and 104.9 back then.

So now we don't have a rock station in Lafayette and Baton Rouge?

You have a tape deck? Get an adapter. You could also get a cheap fm modulator. If not, then spend $100 and get a deck with Bluetooth or USB input.

My car has an after market cd player in it. I have the original tape deck,
But I lack the time, money, and/or expertise to switch it out. If anyone would like to help me out with it, it would be much appreciated

98.1 would be solid if they just stopped playing the songs they overplay by:
Loverboy, Foreigner, Journey, Bad Company, and White Snake, and just play more b-sides by bands like Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Ramones, etc.
98.1 would be a ton better if they just didn't overplay the same shitty songs every day.
