There are 2 companies that control 90% of terrestrial radio. One of them is CBS. They determine what is popular, and 10 years ago, they said new rock was out and country was in. Since then, they have been eliminating virtually all rock stations and largely quit playing rock in advertisements and tv shows. It's functionally dead, guys. Sucks, but true. They know how to market products to classic rock listeners and country listeners, but they don't know how to monitize new rock and roll, so it's being done away with.
Thank goodness for the internet. Young people use that more than fm anyways.

I worked for Clear Channel Radio/iHeart Media. If there was ever a company that gave a metaphorical "frick you" to rock and metal fans, it's that one.
Clear Channel in Baton Rouge had one half-arse effort to please rock fans...97.7 (Downtown Radio). However, it's nothing more than AOR and various songs from the '60s and '70s. It's not a terrible station, but it only furthers the mediocrity that is Eagle 98.1 and their putrid programming.

Back when 93.7 first started in Baton Rouge they got great ratings. They had a request show in the afternoon that actually played Megadeth, Slayer, and a few other bands you never hear on the radio. They switched to 70s soft rock because the ads sold for more money, even with worse ratings. That format bombed and they went back to modern rock, though a slightly neutered version of what they were before.
