She may have bad guidance from her manager.

The shutdown prevents agencies from obligating (i.e. promising to pay) money for new business. But if you have the check in hand, it's good.

Example: You have a deal with a federal agency where they sign a contract to buy a desk from you. The shutdown hits the very next day. You're still getting paid for that desk because you already have a signed contract. But you will not be able to sell a chair to go with it until the shutdown is over.

Source: I do financial management support for one of the larger federal agencies and have been working in this field for 20 years.

Talk to her mgr? Like really the govt had no money cause of the shutdown?? I would have asked for Chase official stance on that.

Have you had this amount of check cashed before? I would understand if you didnt have cash in the acct to back it up.

Drop chase for sure. Crappy bank. Dropped them over a decade ago.

You dont have to be so scared about banks as much as getting robbed. Ha.

My JP Morgan stock has risen from ~$60/share three years ago to ~100/share today probably because of jokers like you.

ETA:

Sorry TOSOV, this was directed at OP.

I work at La Capitol and that would only have a 1 day hold with the first $200 available immediately. We have to make sure the check clears.

See page 20 and 21 of Chase’s Rules Governing Statement linked below.

Next day availability for a US treasury check.

Is the check made out to you or is it to someone that has signed it over to you? If made out to you then ask them to show you their policy change.

I used to work at Chase and if it was a US Treasury check like this guy says, they can and will cash it with a supervisor override.

Unless his account was in the negative. The teller at Chase has zero control over holds placed. Chase's system automatically calculates and places holds. If it was a Treasury check it would never be a 7 day hold though.

The op can also just call Chase 800 number the day after deposit and they will 100% release the hold, if it's a US Treasury check

Lots things I noticed with this rant.

1. I was informed I had to deposit this check and they would not cash it. [/quote]

If the check is not drawn on Chase and you dont have the matching funds in your acct they will make u deposit the check.

2.

The teller also stated their would be a 7 day hold on the chec

If you are long term customer in good standing like you said you are then you should have spoken with the manager and they will see when the check clears and release the hold. Tellers have no power. They just doing their job.

I have also had my account compromised 2 times and had to jump thru hoops to get my money back.

I've had my credit card hacked several times and got refunded same day. It also depends on the tyor hacking. 9/10 times the bank will make you whole and fight the fraud. If they got your checking number then you will have to jump thru hoops. Blame the crooks not the bank.

4.

The teller had the nerve to tell me because of the government shutdown she did not know if the government had money.

Stupid comment by the teller. I'm with you on this one.

5.

I asked for my check back but she proceeded to stamp it endorsement denied.

The teller has a stamp called "for deposit only". You probably should asked for the check back before they stamped it. That being said the manager could have fixed the issue for you. This was bad customer service on her part and should have gotten her supervisor or manager. Even if you were visibly upset they should fixed the issue.

Chase will do that to force you to deposit it in their ban

Dumbest things ever hard even from someone at Walmart. Like I said....if the check is not drawn on Chase and you dont have the funds currently in your account to match the check then you cant cash it. You complained about fraud earlier. ALL checks are potentially fake....that's the world we live in. The teller us not going to sacrifice their job and violate policy for you. Sorry.

Switch to Regions

I work for Regions & this could have easily been avoided. Especially if baw goes to the same branch & they know him by name - the hold could have been lifted with no issues.

Certain federal programs can't order stuff right now, but a US Treasury check is legally every bit as good as cash in hand.

The only reason for a one-day delay is for overnight batch processing and such.

I believe a hold that long on a government check is illegal.

ETA- Funds Availability from Fed

The following types of deposits must be made available on the first business day following the banking day of deposit ("next-day availability"):

Cash deposited in person to one of your employees.
Electronic payments received by your institution for deposit in an account--An electronic payment (a wire transfer or an ACH credit) is considered received (deposited) when your institution has received both payment in collected funds and information on the account and the amount to be credited. (Under other rules, funds for most electronic deposits are made available on the day of deposit.)
U.S. Treasury checks deposited in person to one of your employees or at an ATM owned by your institution (a "proprietary" ATM) and into an account held by a payee of the check.

In short, OP has a habit. His money isn’t long enough to support it.

He won’t cash his account out because it’s in the red.

Good job from the OT bankers!

Truer words have never been spoken.

Last may someone walked into a chase bank in san antonio and withdrew 2000 in cash from our account using only my wife's SSN (no clue how it got stolen). No fricking ID even checked. She came a few hours later and took another 2k. Chase put security locks on our accounts.

1 month later she drives up to DFW and does the exact same thing. Even with out accounts alerted, no ID present. She again comes back and again takes 2k. 8k in cash in a month and those fricking morons have no idea what's going on. Locked our accounts and switched banks that weekend. frick them. Only because of grapevine PD did we get a pic of the bitch. Trailer trash whore.

This story doesn’t make sense. There is some information missing here, besides that OP did not have enough in their account to cover the check
