yea i think smoking peaked in the 70s/80s so im sure that matters
although, even before smoking was a mainstream activity - those people looked old af too (1930s/1940s)

It actually peaked in 1965. It has steadily declined since.
The daily demands on the average American have steadily improved over time. Life used to be much harder. People didn’t devote nearly as much time to personal health. I also agree the styling doesn’t help them.
