If deciding to rip out a Toggle Head bolt out of drywall in a bathroom doesn’t take the cake, I’m not sure what else does.

Nice 3 inch patch work I have baking now.

For the previous homeowner, I’m going to say leaving their stash of weed behind when they was trying to repair the cabinets. Pleasant dried out surprise I found last week. May be one of their kids.

Slipped off a rafter and leg went through the ceiling in living room. All because I was running a phone line...

I learned that pushing the head into the wall leaves a hole that a wine cork will almost perfectly fill.

Moved our electric gas top range out in order to spray for bugs behind it. All was good as I was pushing it back in, but some how the glass top cracked. The top over hung the counter top and I guess it put to much stress on the glass. 900 dollars later and a pulled back muscle we now have a new range.

Also electrocuted myself changing at the fan in my sons room. Turned off the light switches and verified no power to the fixture. Son came into his room and flipped the switch on when I went to the garage to get my wire strippers. Went to put the wire nut on the hot wire and shocked myself. Note to self turn off the breaker when other people are in the house and doing electric work.

I don't have any because I'm perfect, but the previous owner insisted on DIY'ing and half assed everything, for what that's worth.

Garbage disposal went out. Replaced it with a new one. Didn't do dishes for a couple of days due eating out and also replacing piping with PEX in same general time frame. Starting doing dishes and dish washer would not drain water after completing a cycle. Fiddled with it a couple of days. Finally went to buy a new dish washer, connected it, same problem with not draining. Realized i forgot to remove the plug on the garbage disposal when connecting the dish washer drain line.

Many more to list but as they say, they are life lessons you won't forget.

Anything plumbing related except for replacing a disposal. Setting a toilet...I'm always going to break the flange.

Worse thing I did was replace all the hardware in the tub. When I was replacing the drain plug (the part that is higher up in the tub that you use to shut the drain off to fill it up) or the overflow, I didn’t use the washer because I forgot. Next time the kids bathed they had the water flowing in the overflow that then went into the bedrooms! Ruined some carpet for a $.15 piece

I was 22, first home, trying to replace stove/oven, didn’t turn breaker off, jolt threw me against the wall. Dumbest thing I’ve done by far. Quickly learned to ask for help.

Owned a residential fourplex. Older, built in 1955. Tenant had an electrical oven problem. Went to the basement and flipped off the main breaker. Went back upstairs and started messing around and got knocked across the kitchen by the 220. It was still live. I can do all the trades with average to decent outcomes if I do it myself but I won't screw around with electrical.

Didnt realize I needed to shut the water off at the main and let every drop drain out before replacing a garden tub cartridge.

Removed cartridge, shite got real wet.

My first house I bought was the very one I grew up in as a kid and located in the Lower 9th Ward. It was a single, 6 room shotgun and I decided to swap out all the electrical outlets and switches since the ones I had were old and of different brands and looked like crap.

I decided to do this in the daytime so I could shut off the power and get them all done, hopefully in one afternoon. A friend stopped over and we smoked a couple joints while listening to radio and having a couple beers.

He left and I got to doing the outlets first. After removing the plates in the front room I unscrewed the first outlet and reached in and grabbed it to unscrew the wiring and it zapped the crap out of me.

It was then I realized I was listening to the radio plugged into the wall in the next room and had forgotten to pull the main to start the work.

Just glad it wasn't a 220 outlet for a window A/C.

Well with that patch job, make sure you don’t use 5/8” to patch it if it’s only 1/2”. That’s my dumbest mistake. And the dumbest part was how long it took me to realize that I was never going to get it floated and sanded flat.

Fell off a six foot ladder working on something in the back yard. Landed right on my back and ladder fell on my foot and my ankle hasn’t been the same since. I wrestled like hell trying to install a dishwasher and felt like an idiot. I’ve cracked several electrical boxes while trying to install new light fixtures so I had to go into attic and knock in new ones rolling around in insulation. I could go on for days but I’m still living to tell the stories.

I could write a book with a trade for each chapter. Not a repair but a good story - I was mounting a shelf in our laundry room, drilling some pilot holes. The opposite side of the wall is the garage, circuit breaker box on that wall.

Drilling, having to push harder, drilling, BOOM. Entire house goes dark, just really loud 80s thrash metal in my headphones in a pitch black tiny room. Took a few minutes to realize what I just did & then full on panic attack. Scary as shite. Thought I was dead, then thought I would have to pay tens of thousands of dollars in repairs. Super lucky though, didn’t hit any wires and drilled through dead center, bit poked through the two columns of breakers on the other side. Bit broke off during my freak out. It’s still there.

Called my dad, he was there in about 10 minutes. Humorous look of disapproval on his face. A look I know very well. All he had to do was flip the main breaker back on because it tripped, I guess as a safety mechanism. No injury, No damage Could’ve been way worse. I haven’t worked up the courage to have an electrician come out because of impending shame. Forgot it happened until I saw this thread. I’m gonna have to make that phone call tomorrow.

Don’t ask how.
Don’t want to talk about it.
I cracked the thinner kitchen quartz countertop.

Cost me $50k as my wife fixed the issue by hiring a designer & contractor to remodel the kitchen and dining room which was a total gut.

Similar mistake here, went to pull a wall anchor out and I thought it was a push in anchor. Put the screw in a few threads and pulled with some channel locks. I ended up with a massive hole due to it actually being a screw in sheetrock anchor....I felt like an idiot, my wife made sure I knew I was one.

Oh, another. I was changing all of the faucets in the house and I got to the last one. I turned off the water like normal and started disassembly of the faucet handle. Suddenly the valve blew off in my face and shot water to the ceiling. I started trying to jamb the assembly back together yelling "what is happening?!" Before I realized I forgot to turn both the hot AND the cold water off. I blame the kids for distracting me, but you know, that could happen to anybody....
