What is the highest you've ever seen for your BMI and what is your current
BMI?
BMI?
Posted on 5/13/24 at 1:43 pm to HeartAttackTiger
highest was 36 when i was 244 lbs.
current is 27ish but huge difference in body fat percentage
Understand though, i have to literally get into stage ready physique aka below 6% bodyfat on a dexa scan to get to what is considered a normal BMI. I have also been lifting for almost 27 years other than the 3 year per after i had my first kid and got up to 244.
also understand I am the rarity, along with many on this board, who BMI does not apply. if you have not been lifting weights progressively for atleast 3 years, it almost 100% applies to you.

Highest was before I went to med school 11 years ago and that was 33.4. I was a fat lazy bum and was not lifting or exercising at all. I hated myself those days.
Last I got on one of those fancy scales it was 28.4. Which was maybe ~2 months ago. Not a huge drop numerically, but I am now almost 40 pounds lighter than those days and have way more muscle mass.

I'm 6'2" and I got up to around 215ish the year after college because I kept my college diet and wasn't working out/playing basketball daily anymore. That put me around 27.6 BMI.
I got back in shape pretty quick after I saw some pics of myself at a friends wedding. Eventually got all the way down to 165 (21.5 BMI).
Now with kids and middle age, I hover around 195 (25 BMI), but I'm also holding more muscle mass than I have ever held in my life.

Not sure the highest I've ever been, but I'm currently at 30.
ETA: I'm also currently 1% of BF away from being the leanest I've ever been.

28 BMI - 10% body fat. shite is a joke.

I had a BMI of 30 during the covid fiasco. Drank and ate a lot more than normal that year.
Currently at 26. Currently 15-18% bodyfat. Guessing at BF percentage. I have visible abs in the morning.

I'm not proud of it, but 2.5 years ago I was at 41.3. Today I'm at 30.8. I'm 5# from officially no longer qualifying as obese. I personally don't think I'll ever fall into the 'normal' category.

Highest was 45.
Currently 42.
I don't give a shite about BMI.
Now, waist to hip ratio(WHR), now we're talking.

BMI is bad for weightlifters as you said.
It can also be bad for old people. We see people with sarcopenia and little muscle mass who have too much fat yet fall under a bmi <25.
It’s a decent to good tool for population, but bad for individuals.

That's a good point as well, and probably not one that most folks take into account. When BMI gets poo-poo'd, it's usually by the "I'm too muscular" crowd not the "too little muscle" crowd, but I regularly see sarcopenic individuals in the hospital as well and they aren't in great health either. My only fear with BMI is when it is taken as a single data point, or maybe in conjunction with one or a few more pieces of information like age and sex, and I get slotted into a "High Risk" category based off those data points alone. It's just a scoring tool, and it is best used in conjunction with a comprehensive assessment to help clinicians make the best decisions for their patients. When a health insurance company uses it to make black/white decisions on claims, well, that is usually gonna suck for the patient. Hell, if your MD/DO/NP/PA just inputs data and chooses to follow the treatment algorithm or worse, HAS TO follow the treatment algorithm, without picking their eyes up from their tablet and actually assessing you, you're fricked.
And while I'm certainly a big beefy weightlifter dude and my BMI is not a good representation of my actual risk level, I did just have a heart attack typing that first paragraph out. Gotta go now, getting prepped for cath lab.

never really tracked my BMI. it varies too much depending on your training style.

..turns out it was just gas!

Highest was 23.3; lowest was 20.0; today 21.5
I’m 5’7, 137 lbs, 61 years old. Lift a good bit, with pull-ups, pushups, and pickleball mixed in. Walk the dog over a mile every day through hills, garden a good bit as well. I typically have a visible 4-pack to 6-pack. I’ve always had a protein focused diet without a sweet tooth. Really fortunate about that.
