Joe Burrow has money now. Maybe he can buy us some cornerbacks.

Therein lies the paradox. A&M and Texas boosters aren’t content to be silent partners. They like to get a little more involved than elite coaches would like them to be. Florida has the same problem with their boosters. They have never hired an elite coach. Even Meyer wasn’t elite when at the time he was hired.

No we can't compete with Texas or A&M as far as paying recruits. Never will. Give up on the pipe dream of thinking that you can! Instead you have to be smarter. Texas and A&M can't pay everyone. In my opinion, talent evaluation, coaching and development are the keys to success in this new era. Every year the NFL drafts players from all across the country and they are not Longhorns or Aggies. We need to invest in our player evaluation department. We need to be like the NFL and find the best players that fit our system either in high school or on other teams. There are more than enough stellar athletes to field a great team. The prima donnas can be beat!

It’s a double edged sword. Teams that pay big for elite players run a much higher risk of locker room cancers when all the players know how much the others got paid, and many players are making so much money that they don’t have to fully buy in to the program because they’re making generational wealth. (See Texas A$M)

The priority can quickly become money over winning.

It sucks but teams that are starving for a championship will try to buy one. Not only can we not compete money wise but we’ve been successful recently. Texas A&M, Texas, Michigan, USC, Florida St, Miami ect will do whatever is take to become a threat to win a National Championship.

This is exactly what has Saban so spun up.

that’s nothing and I mean nothing if the big time Texas alums get involved. They can drop 100 million a year on NIL easy probably with 4 or 5 donors

So can LSU. There are billionaires who are LSU fans. But we are winning national titles without it, so they are unmotivated.

Exactly UT created a investment 1billion in gold about 10 years ago. They have so much money to blow.

I’m not conflating anything

If there was a structured player payment program, NIL wouldn’t even exist. Instead, colleges cried poor and said it was impossible while they were adding a second barbershop to the football ops building.

I wonder if Congress ever gets involved.

Why would Congress get involved? They have enough problems just passing a budget on time without killing the government.

If schools want parity and a level playing field, then conferences or (gasp) the governing body for the sport need to set some sort of guidelines.

Congress didn’t create this problem; schools did. You don’t need Congress to fix everything.

Schools didn’t start it, California initiated legislation to pay college athletes and ncaa knew it was not something they had the resources to fight so they gave in

I know money is awesome, but A&M is something like 1-7 over their last 8 games against Power 5 teams. Terrible.

Football players want to go pro. They will go wherever their opportunity, or perceived opportunity, to go pro is the highest…period. No kid should give up on that dream for $750k payout out of high school, if they’re good enough.

Have you seen some of the quotes coming out of college station? They’ve managed to brainwash kids into thinking they develop them for the pros as well as anyone. Jacoby Mathews was one of them when asked why he chose a$m over LSU.

The NCAA never gave in. They lost. They spent the entire grace period lobbying for federal legislation to override the state laws. Then Kavanaugh’s opinion in the Alston case made pretty clear that they would lose if it went to court. But by that point the clock had run out anyway, so they threw together an “interim” NIL policy at the last minute, which was basically them throwing their hands up.

If they had spent the literal years of notice focusing on ways to comply with the state NIL laws instead of begging for federal relief, we might have a different situation today. Possibly.

It’s mind boggling to me that there are still people who still think it’s not equatable to paying players.

We all know what NIL is supposed to be. When you have these massive collectives being built for the sole purpose of creating NIL deals for players, that’s not the same thing as a player getting paid for autographs or legit endorsements.

Sure, there may be some element of legitimacy in the sense that the players will actually provide some level of endorsement, appearance, or whatever. But it’s clear that these collectives are operating primarily as a tool to recruit and retain players.

That's fine and all...but they'll just keep hiring bum coaches.

Elite head coaches won't allow the kind of access that the boosters that Texas and A&M have insist on having.
