Before Cameron made it to campus Jay Johnson said something like "If he makes it to campus he has a good chance to leave the first pick in the first round". Sure that could be "coach speak", trying to sell him on coming to LSU. I just don't think Jay would say it unless he believes it to be a good possibility.

Once Cameron made it to campus Jay said something like "His family and him would tell me how much they would like to make it to campus, and I never really thought it would actually happen."

He did in fact make it to campus and he doesn't regret coming. Cameron's father told SoloTiger and me, that he loves it at LSU. If he does leave the top arm in his draft class that will be a great selling point for Jay to use with future recruits. Come to LSU, have a great time, develop, win a championship and leave rich.

The question that I really have is how much will he contribute as a freshmen? Right now I have him as our #4 pitcher, and it might be really hard to bounce one of the top three out of the rotation. Which I have as Holman, Hurd and Jump. I just don't know if you can't keep him out of the rotation.

When we had our fall scrimmage against the Cajuns, he was dominating. He struck out six in a row in two innings. Travinski let strike three get past him and the runner made it on base. So the seventh batter comes up and he strikes him out, no problem.

It wasn't just the 7 strike outs in a row, it was that he made it look easy. My memory might be playing tricks on me but I believe he threw mostly strikes. I don't recall any fullcounts or many balls at all.

You can't coach his size 6'5" and 240lb or the fact that he is a lefty. How long before this guy is the best pitcher in college baseball?

He’s good. More than likely your Ace in 2025 and 2026.

coveted by professional teams

The good thing is you don't need him to be pitcher #1 right away
He can develop on a deep staff

It's not often an arm talent like tis kid has makes it to campus. Hope the kid stays healthy and balls out.

Would love to see a Guidry and Johnson 8&9 inning to close out games.

And because the staff is so deep there will not be a need to put a huge amount of stress on him in year one.

I think his role this season will be a back end bullpen guy unless he proves you just can't keep him out the rotation. I like him to be able to close out games. He can come in and have 2-3 inning saves if needed. Good thing to have at the back end of games.

No trouble with Cameron. Parents are really nice. I'm sure he is a great guy.

I know this sounds crazy but I found myself wondering if we are sleeping on this guy? Everyone is really high on him but nobody would peg him as our ace this year.

He has more tools than any pitcher on the staff. He might not even start this year or could he be the best pitcher on our team in 2024?

I know that probably won't happen, but could it?

He seems to be too good to not have him starting. Since the first two weekends are 4 game series, he’ll probably start the year in that 4 man rotation.

After that, do you keep him starting in midweek for his development as a starter, or use him in long relief?

Highest ranked recruit to ever make it to LSU.

SI article

The No. 11 overall player and No. 2 left-handed pitcher in the class of 2023, Johnson becomes the highest-ranked prospect to ever reach campus for LSU. Dylan Crews was ranked No. 13 when he arrived in Baton Rouge.

I kind of agree with Baytiger and Lester. I think he will be a shut down guy on the back end to start the year and possibly move into the rotation later.

It was only one weekend but he was arguably our best pitcher against the Cajuns. A part of me is wondering if that will play out later in the season.

That might be a bit much for a freshman but it wouldn't exactly shock me.

i can see him working out of the pen on weekends. depending upon the weekend workload, he can start during the week with very specific pitch counts to manage his wear and tear.

Sorry to derail Wild, any additional chatter on Guidry being stretched out?

If he stays healthy then he's very likey to go 1.1 in the 2026 draft.
