I liked the call. We've had kicks blocked before this year, the last thing you want to do is have one blocked and maybe returned for the tying TD (wouldn't have been shocked if Billy went for two)

We had been moving the ball all game. You should be able to get 1 yard to keep the drive going and burn more clock. Which we did.

Back to back false starts was inexcusable. It was 3rd and 2, we could have ended it right there. My butt was puckered when we had to kick a 47 yd FG, luckily the blocking held up and Ramos drilled it. I'd be lying if I wasn't a nervous wreck when we were lining up for it.

Good call. Even if we miss that field goal, much tougher for Florida to drive down with a score with the deceased time and timeouts used. Lean on your offense that had been playing well.

I also think going for 4th downs in general is good because it sends a good message to your team- Kelly had confidence they would execute, and they did.

Here was my comments on a previous thread yesterday...

I was ok with it once I thought about it a while. The odds of the following choices could be:

run for 1st - 80%
Kick FG - 50% maybe less with the ST fiascos lately
Punt - gets you nothing.

Running for it and getting stuffed was not high risk since the a FG from the 30 would be a 48 yder.

When we finally did kick we had burned a lot more clock and the risk of missing less impactful.

False. And by false, I mean not close to true.

Was just thinking back on how big that play call was. We all know that if it didn't work and UF ended up tying it, then winning after that, a lot of people would be calling for Kelly's head for that specific play call.

100% true.

It’s easy to say it was the right call when it worked out. But I think I would have been good with it either way. Converting forced UF to burn their final two timeouts on defense. And if the conversion had failed, we still had two timeouts ourselves. So Florida would have had to play it perfectly to get to OT without giving us a chance to still attempt a game winning FG.

FWIW, I liked the first attempt in the Tennessee game. I thought the second one against Tennessee was pretty questionable from our own 46 yard line, but after that we were in such a hole that we kind of had to go for the rest of them.

I have a feeling we would have gone for it again a few plays later had the penalties not pushed us back and I would have been all for it there as well.

Maybe, now that Ramos made that clutch kick it'll be a different story next game, but the odds were much greater we gain a yard there over making a 45 yard field goal.

Entirely situational. Absolutely the correct call. We are in the age of offense and analytics. Our kick game hasn’t been superb. That’s a 44 yard field goal, which is no gimme. Analytics are saying go for it on fourth way more often than conventional “gut” thinking.

How are you feeling with them having the ball on our 27 with 3 minutes left down by 7 and a mountain of momentum? Chance of picking up the yard is fairly high. It almost shuts the door. Making a field goal doesn’t even fully shut the door.

My problem was more with the call on 2nd down when you’re working to drain the clock.
Thankfully, it didn’t matter.
He ain’t Miles - thank God. Next ballgame.

The right call to win the game on the road

It was definitely the right call at the time, and LSU looked very much like they would score a TD until being stymied by two false-start penalties and a sack of Daniels. Still that was the proper call on 4th & 1 on the 27-- both on the road, or at home.

Thats the difference. Teams now have analytics calling plays more than traditional sentiment.

Analytics are mostly for morons who can’t think. And since most coaches are morons, analytics have their place. The classic is those stupid cards that tell coaches when to go for two. And they get it wrong all the time. For one thing, if it isn’t the fourth quarter you should never go for two, but these buffoons do it a lot.

Mad Hatter did it because he had nothing to lose. Shortly after when he did, he rarely did the mad hatter thing IIRC. He became conservative AF.
