27. It won't be Penix's prime because if everything goes right with Kirk he will just be starting to get playing time at that age.

Do you know the windfall of assets that pick could have gotten them? They could have even traded back and still gotten him.

Penix was projected top 15-20 everywhere I looked. So they couldn't go back more than 5-6 spots and still be assured to get him, that's ignoring rumors other teams were trying to move up to get him. The Jets netted a 3rd and 4th (but gave up a 6th) to move back from 10 to 11. I can't see them getting better than a 2nd, at best, but who trades with and how are they confident that Penix is still there when they pick especially with Denver desperate for a QB at 12?

Teams fall in love with players. It's evident they really liked him and valued him as a franchise QB. So it makes sense to take him. The value of hitting on the QB position in the draft is unmatched..

Do you know that could be coming down the line?
He wasn't THAT valuable to drastically trade up for and maybe they tried.
But like Favrve being drafted by Atlanta, even Glanville said he'd never start....in a, "helll will freeze over" sort of way....Pennix was the best available.... And you can flip it. He's a commodity that they own the rights to even if he never starts. It's value now or value later.

If you view the Cousin’s deal as containing risk then you must think similarly of the Penix deal at this spot. It just seems that a more immediate and impactful edge rusher or tackle would have made more sense.

QBs in the draft are kind of like buying a new car, the moment you drive it off the lot the value dips considerably (until they perform)
If you sit Pennix for even a year, teams aren’t going to be antsy to trade when you randomly decide to get rid of him. That’s going to make them wonder why they are waiving the white flag already. You’ll get at best a mid round pick.

Keeping QBs upright in the NFL is a growing concern.
66 quarterbacks recorded a start in the NFL in 2023. 68 the year before.
Only 8 QBs played the entire season.

This is my problem with it. I think Penix is going to be very good, the people who are dissing his actual skills as third-round level are silly and reacting to the hype he drew or to the fact that his coach is now at a school they hate.
But the Falcons couldn’t have just come up with the plan to take him last week. Or you’d like to think they wouldn’t have, although we are talking about the Falcons here.
So if this is where you are looking to go in the draft, why do you open the checkbook TO THAT EXTENT for a QB who’s relatively aged and has an Achilles tear on his resume?

People forget that's how Cousins got his start.
The Redskins drafted him with the 100th pick (with criticism) after they selected RG3 with the second pick in the same draft. RG3 had a great start and became the face of the franchise but then injuries derailed him. In stepped Cousins and the rest is history. Plenty of other examples like Aaron Rodgers being drafted to replace an aging veteran.
Insurance policies are always a tough pill to swallow but when they pay off nobody is complaining.

Using a top 10 pick on an insurance policy is a horrible waste of resources when this roster has so many other holes. It also sends very mixed signals to the team and the fanbase. I don't think Cousins would have signed with the Falcons had he known they weren't going to try and win with him.

Big difference grabbing an insurance policy with the 24th pick coming off 3 straight division titles vs the 8th pick coming off of 6 straight losing seasons.
Perhaps there was a need elsewhere?
