JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jaguars and the city of Jacksonville have agreed to a $1.4 billion “stadium of the future” that would keep the franchise in one of the NFL’s smallest markets for another 30 years.

The proposal calls for each side to contribute $625 million to the $1.25 billion project. Jacksonville, which won’t levy any new taxes to pay for the rebuild, would chip in another $150 million to get EverBank Stadium ready for construction in 2026.

The plan was presented at a city council meeting Tuesday. Councilmembers are expected to vote on it in late June, with a simple majority of the 19 members needed to pass. It would then advance to the NFL owners meeting in October, where 24 of 32 votes would be needed for final approval.

Construction would begin following the 2025 season. The Jaguars would play in front of a reduced capacity in 2026 and host home games in either Gainesville or Orlando the following year. Daytona Beach International Speedway had been under consideration but has since been eliminated.

The sides expect the revamped stadium to lead to more high-profile events such as U.S. soccer matches and concerts.

The 63,000-seat, open-air stadium includes a translucent covering that’s the equivalent of “wearing shades in the sun,” Lamping said. It’s expected to lower outside temperatures by 15 degrees.

The stadium plan also includes 140% more concourse space, 190 new points of sale, 16 new escaladers, 12 new elevators and 12 new restrooms.

The city and the Jaguars still hope to add substantial development to the surrounding area, which is expected to include a University of Florida satellite campus that would bring in 10,000 graduate students. Deegan called the surrounding area critical to the development of the downtown area.

Crazy that billionaire NFL owners expect the cities to foot the bill for their toys.

Until the feds end this silliness, this what a city like Jacksonville has to do for major pro sports. Shame on the GOP in congress and US Senate not ending this nonsense after Atlanta lost the MLB all-star game due to left wing politics.

i mean, I don't blame them for trying. it's good business to not tie up your own funds and leverage the money of others, so that you can buy income producing assets with your own

i blame the city leaders and politicians for caving to their demands and footing the bill. they need to push back and tell the sports owners to GFY

Booooo on the city for giving in.

They’ll claim it as a win because of “no new taxes” but they’ll get it from the citizenry somehow.

This is not the worst deal I have ever seen of this sort. When considering they also host UF-UGa there every year, they’re looking at entertainment around the stadium and it keeps Jacksonville as a “major league” professional sports town it’s probably a good deal.

So this means FL/GA will miss one or two years at Jax. Will they do a home/away or find another neutral site? If they do home/away there is a chance they like it and decide to keep doing that. Risky for Jax but they do need a new stadium.

Florida and UGA did a H/H in the 90s, while stadium was getting built, so that definitely could be possibility

Even though its 30 years ago, what was the consensus in keeping it home/away?

And the demographics will be different now. Might see a bigger fight to keep it home/away. Attitudes change over time.

Turner needs content to replace the NBA, which they are supposedly losing to KKKomcast/NBC.

So in regards to where they will play. Gainesville is not fitting the NFL criteria it is looking like Orlando is stepping up. Makes sense. Simply the ease of getting there. That is the word I am hearing.
