While the conspiracy theories are fun, I think the most plausible scenario is:
- Ippei is a degenerate gambler who felt invincible because his BFF is the biggest name in baseball
- Ippei realized he wasn't as invincible as he thought when the illegal bookie hit with a bill for $4.5m
- Ippei went to his incredibly rich BFF for a bail out
- The very stupid BFF agreed cover the debt, not realizing what he was doing was illegal
- The illegal bookie got caught and Ippei's and Shohei's name showed up in the investigation
- Looking to get out ahead of the story because baseball has famous history with its best players being involved in gambling, Shohei had Ippei do a tell-all interview to make it clear that Shohei's only involvement was him giving him money, not realizing that would still implicate him in illegal activity
- Once Shohei realized the latter, his team made the about face to make Ippei the fall guy by saying the money was stolen, clearing Shohei of any knowing involvment.
- Shohei's team didn't think ESPN would still publish details from the original Ippei interview
- Shohei got caught in a terrible attempt to cover up, so now it's impossible to believe anything he says
- All hell broke loose

That does make the most logical sense.

I think what's wild is that I've seen some claim ESPN was being unethical because they still published details of the original Ippei interview even though Shohei's team asked them not to.
What they did is the exact opposite of unethical journalism

It's no more wild than the people who think Shohei was throwing games

That was a given reaction though.

A lot of that makes sense. What about the bookie extending 4.5 mil to the interpreter?
Posted on 3/22/24 at 4:53 pm to GCTiger11
The bookie probably had a don’t ask type thing going knowing that the money was coming from Ohtani

think the more realistic story is that Ippei really had 4.5 million in gambling debt and that Ohtani did pay it off for him. Ohtani lawyers saw it and freaked out by their client sending millions to an illegal bookie being investigated by the feds so this was the only possible solution.
Ray Donovan doing some work.

Mizuhara said he told Ohtani he would pay him back.
Where is he going to get 4.5 mil from. Gambling?

Gambling on sports isn't legal in many states. California doesn't allow it.
But why use an illegal gambling operation when a quick trip to Vegas is like driving from Houston to Austin?

Convenience and credit. Most illegal books all have websites these days anyways

Agreed.

Yeah, the interpreter would have been cut off well before the 4.5 unless the bookie already knew Shohei was very involved.

Wait til Ohtani finds out the Dodgers stole from him too. LOL
At least he’ll be living in the best assisted facilities the world can provide, assuming we still have a viable planet at that time

I was so relieved to know that MLB has officially opened its own investigation.
Rob Manfred immediately offered Shohei Ohtani and his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, complete immunity to finally get to the bottom of this gambling scandal.

Stereotypes once again coming to life: Ohtani, the obsessive Asian gambler.
