He was taking a ton of challenges and risks in his roles during this era. It sucks that they mostly all ended up bombing financially and it resulted in him isolating himself into action/tentpoles roles for the rest of his career. I think part of that is probably connected to Scientology and his rise as the face of those guys as well.
Sucks we probably missed out on another universe where he is a bigger risk taker and has movies with Tarintino, Scorsese, A24 type movies, etc

PTA's best film, IMO. Bold, rich, sprawling, deep, but still entertaining. Exceptional music (PTA said he was inspired by Aimee Mann's music, IIRC) helped maintain cohesion across multiple storylines. The cast was fantastic.
I saw it in the theater and the ending caught us all by surprise, but made for great conversation afterward.
Love the narrated opening that rolls right into a musical montage of character introductions.

Yeah it’s quite a feat looking back.
I recently saw Hard Eight for the first time that has PBH and John C Reily and PTA directing and it’s really good too. You can kind of see the seeds of magnolia sprinkled out into essentially what is a crime genre movie

Most overrated movie ever. When the frogs started dropping at the end I was so confused why this was considered a classic by anybody

My friend’s mom rented it from Blockbuster and unknowingly started watching it on disc 2. She still liked it.

I love this movie except for a few blah moments. Like when they’re all singing that song in their various moments was weird.

I would encourage you to ask yourself why you find direction like this off-putting and see if you reach a deeper appreciation for the film.
Magnolia is a straight-up melodrama that deliberately challenges and manipulates you emotionally. PTA took a genre primarily reserved for trashy network made-for-TV movies and miniseries, and attempted to make meaningful art with it. I think it's too easy to dismiss some genre conventions and pretend Magnolia is a good movie in spite of them rather than because of them. But I could be wrong.

Just watched this film for the first time.
Story is ok, but the acting is obviously incredible.
I watched it passively at times as I had it on while working from home. Didn't miss anything to make me confused or anything, but I probably need to sit down with no other distractions and watch it again.

One of my favorites. If they re-edited out The Worm plotline (which ends up going nowhere) and the sing along, I think it would've made a lot of all time lists. Writing, acting, music, the idea itself, etc. are all incredible imo

Apparently, he wants to go back to making non-action movies (being 61 is probably a factor) and working with acclaimed directors.

I hope he’s serious about that and pursues it. Heard some rumors he was attached to the next tarintino movie but that just got scrapped
I think Covid was a real jolt to some of the old guard directors and actors. Saw their own death in a way, seems like almost all the 60 plus year old directors have been putting out as much film as they can before they can’t do it any longer.
