My thoughts are average movie and great performances. The screenplay didn't deliver like it should have, but having that many different stories tie together was extremely difficult. It probably would have been a better theatrical play.

It's an incredibly unlikely phenomenon.
One aspect of Magnolia is that due to the large numbers of interactions people have with one another, incredibly unlikely phenomenon are more likely to happen than you would think.
It also hints at a supernatural or quasi-religious power pushing characters together (think the storm in Shakespeare's The Tempest). People living their lives in circles around each other, but then this force of nature - beyond nature - comes and shakes up their patterns so that they are there for each other when they need it the most.

I love this movie.
Completely changed what I thought Tom Cruise was or could be as an actor
I think it’s my favorite PTA movie despite its flaws. There’s no way you can’t connect to some of the emotions in this movie.
PSH as always just a different level of good acting.
I love the Aimee Mann sound track. Idk why but I highly enjoy that decision.

One of Shakespeare's final plays, usually seen as him looking back on his life's work and legacy as well as the power of art.
The eponymous storm in The Tempest is a magical creation by the "good" magician Prospero. He plots to regain his political standing after exile and through the use of premonitions and elemental magic, conjures up a storm to bring a ship of noblemen to the island where he and his daughter live.
In Magnolia, the storm prompts Jim to save Donnie, allows Frank and Earl to reconcile, it alters Jimmy's suicide attempt, etc. Because these are pivotal events in their lives and because they all transpire because of this bizarre weather phenomenon, it suggests to the viewer that the storm is guiding the characters to their destiny. Whether that destiny is crafted by God or "fate" or just the simple addition of all the people you meet in your life is just left up to the viewer.

This is a standout role from a career of standout roles.
The list of all-time performances you can genuinely describe as "tender" are very slim, and of those, the list of male performances are downright miniscule.
PSH was asked to portray a character that is basically a human embodiment of love and compassion with nothing to give it an edge - no comedy, no moralizing judgment, and by God somehow he makes it work, he makes it seem authentic.

Its called a waterspout and has existed throughout time with recorded events back to Roman times and as recently as 2005 in Serbia.
Basically a tornado over water that sucks them up.
As to the significance or what Paul Thomas Anderson intended, I don't know. Its a rare occurrence and biblical and since the movie discusses rare occurences and impossible happenstance.
This guy thinks its about Exodus. But why is the pertinent question to the symbolism.
And here is Exodus 8:2 -
“And the Lord spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Let my people go, that they may serve me. And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs.”

In the opening scene, when the depressed kid throws himself off the top of the apartment building in a bungled suicide attempt, there is a rope tied up on the roof of the building in a fashion that looks like the number 82.

I don’t know if there was or was intended to be true meaning behind that, but it’s extremely effective. It’s like a big release after all these emotions and trauma were being built up, then the frogs come in and it’s like a slap in the face that kind of puts you in a different place than you just were
Phillip Baker Hall is another performance in this that is so good. The Quiz show scenes are so anxiety driven and create this real pressure you feel while watching, then you watch his reckoning in private when he needs to admit his evils before he dies and it’s so real

So many little things always get me.
Like when he checks into the TV station and tells the receptionist, "I'm Jimmy Gator," as if he hasn't walked into that office thousands of times before.

Cruise really showed the range he is capable of in this movie. Putting on a show as Frank on stage was made for Tom Cruise, and there's the incredible and heart wrenching scene of him at his dad's bedside, what I didn't expect was the line when he first gets to his father's house and PSH is at the door, "hey Phil? I will drop kick those fricking dogs if they come near me". Laughed my arse off
