The best villains are those that have a method to their madness, i.e. they truly believe what they are doing, no matter how heinous, is for the best. Thanos comes to mind in this regard.

I was rooting for Alan Rickman’s Sheriff of Nottingham over Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the villain in Mission Impossible 3 was pretty incredible.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki has had a great arc too from beginning to end.

Kathy Bates was terrific in Misery.

Very good list. TLAV probably had the biggest cast of douchebag characters. I don't think any had any redeemable values.

Not necessarily. The ending to Se7en is a notable exception to this. And while it is not the end of the entire story, The Empire Strikes Back is what it is because Vader (after wrecking shite the whole movie) not only beats Luke but tells him he’s also his daddy.
