it's the most efficient way to go from the street to the airlines, these are the facts and they are undisputed

now tack on 20-40% and play the premium game, I've a buddy, 737 CA, kids are gone so he bids a trip, dumps it all into open time and just cherry picks premium trips that have been built due to busted sequences, he also does the IMax and triple dips after that, I'm going to ask him what he made in '23
That sounds incredible, except the part about being on the guppy.

I read that on APC and Facebook but don’t know any of those guys. It wouldn’t surprise me. We’ve got some absolute psychopaths. I like playing the system, but I also like my time off. I can’t fathom working enough to do that.

bingo! QL is where it’s at, it’s nice to feed from the Premium trough occasionally but I wouldn’t be a slave to it, maybe

The guard/service is not currently something he wants to do.
The USAF/USAFR/ANG is really not the military. It's an entire different mindset/class of people than the Army or Marines.

If your kid wants a guaranteed flight spot, send him to LSU and then Marine OCS.

I’m unfamiliar with flight schools in that area, but will disagree with those suggesting a 4 year aviation degree. I would highly recommend getting a degree in an unrelated field to have non-aviation career options down the road to fall back on.
Kind of late to the thread, but I wanted to come back and emphasize this. As a graduate of a collegiate aviation program. Not worth it. Please tell your son to get a degree in anything BUT aviation. I've flown with engineers, business majors, architects, you name it. The key to this career is a fall back.
I got my training through the Air Force. Five years ago I would've recommended the military as the path of choice. Not anymore. The civilian track is currently the fastest path to a major airline cockpit.
There may be some exceptions with the guard and reserve, but I'm seeing 23 year olds pop up on my company's seniority list. They aren't military and seniority is everything in this career. He needs to do whatever it takes to get hired as early as possible.

Common trick with some of the Captains I fly with. In my fleet you have to be pretty senior to pull it off though. The key is holding the desirable rotations. Looking forward to being in that position.
Sorry your friend has to fly the 73

Just started looking into ATP that was mentioned earlier.
Is ATP an alternative to the collegiate route or in addition to?
Just curious as to the need for a fall back? Is turnover/burn out high?

This would be extremely expensive though, right?

kid needs to go to school so he's not a grunt and then join the actual Military to fly

King Air if you are lucky. Professional may also mean pulling a banner at the local high school football games.

sigh, everybody that knows nothing about this has pretty strong advice about it

Get ya check book ready if he's not going the military route. La tech and Auburn have good schools. But it cost a frick ton of money for flight time

Can he join any Military branch and fly right out of high school..NO
Can he join the National Guard and fly right out of high school..NO
Is that his best option..NO...
If hes not going to a Service Academy, he should go to College and get a degree while learning to fly..
THEN
He can go into the Military if he wants and fly
please, tell me what else i don't know

that if he enlists in the guard they will pay for college and he is basically “rushing” the unit while he’s earning his college degree to try to get sent to pilot training, and guard units love to send one of their own, doesn’t have the active duty commitment, has reducible flight hour minimums for civilian ratings and can start applying for airline jobs sooner than his civilian counterparts and all the while getting paid to fly in the guard and accrue retirement points

after bootcamp and a weekend warrior commitment..
if hes going to college to fly, he might as well do it on his own and not owe the guard..
He could just as easily join ROTC in college and commission out to fly
I get your guard hard on, but being enlisted in the guard when your dream is to fly, is a serious downgrade in thinking

again, this is years down the road, so he might as well go to school and then decide

whatever you say dude, I’ve been in this business for almost 45 years and an directly involved with pilot recruitment and hiring, I’m pretty familiar with all the avenues of how to get here, for me personally two years out of LSU flying fighters, two more 727 co-pilot, three more 727 captain, I think the guard is a pretty good path
