Just found this thread…my 16 yr old is looking at the same thing and we’ve been considering different routes. Aviation schools, military, etc.

We have a ANG base here in Cola, SC. Also, my FIL was a PP so he’s flown quite a bit and is comfortable. Hell, I’ve even thought about going for my license now too.

What would you suggest as the best approach (pun intended) for going the Guard route? Get his PPL first? Start college and then try to get in? Do I need to start calling my State Rep now?

He’s also 6’3 and 215 so I don’t know if he could fit in a fighter….

TIA.

if you have the means to get his college without enlisting I would suggest that you get him into college, have him start taking flying lessons and get a couple of ratings, and pester guard units all over the place, let them fight over him, I just got a friend of mine’s son recommended for pilot training slot in the SC air guard (F-16) he enlisted and is a junior at the Citadel so he’s going straight to training as soon as he gets his sheepskin

If he's a good student, mature and dedicated, look into a Service Academy.

If that's not an option look into a ROTC program (AF preferably).

If that's not an option, contact an Air Guard Recruiter (they don't work hard or much, so keep trying). It looks like that's a fighter unit near you. I'd have him look at being a crew chief, he'd get face time with flight crew and once he graduates college, he could lean on that when interviewing for a pilot spot in the unit. I'm 6'3 too and deployed with an A10 unit in 2016, they had a pilot that towered over me (in height and girth), I estimate he was 6'6. I don't know if he had a waiver or what (or folks just looked the other way which happens more than you'd expect).

Thanks! Any major/curriculum that will help his cause or does it matter? We don’t have any juice in the industry so he’s going to have to do it the hard way.

no, just a four year degree

nothing wrong with that, guard units love to see young people eager and hungry, best of luck

ETA: I will say that now that I'm at the end of my career, a lot of opportunities are available to me because of my degree(engineering,) but by by no means is that a prerequisite

STEM degree would be best, but not necessary.

I think these aviation curriculums slow down your progression and drive up your costs, there's not enough scholastics to stretch out a commercial/instrument/multi over four years

Agreed. My son completed all but his private at L3Harris (LINK /) Orlando area. Federal student loans are also available.

I am a GA pilot. And you are dead right. Becoming a pilot now is foolish. There will be zero human pilots in 25 years. Planes can fly themselves just fine. And they can land themselves now. Ordinary planes that are being produced right now and sold to schmucks like me have a pushbutton that, if pressed, will cause the plane to find a nearby precision approach and land itself.

How old was he when he started the program and what is he doing now?

I'm thinking the aviation school may be a better route for our son. Will be a large chunk of $, but I am not sure if the service route is right for him if his heart is not in that route.

you should be setting the bar higher

maybe, at least for freighters, can you believe how much money you could make in 25 years in the big leagues?

It’s coming. Your avionics are always behind our “bug smashers”.

I just thought to check this message. Sorry for disconnect.

He's currently instructing in Nashville to build hours. It took him just under 1.5 years from instrument through CFII.
