You can kiss my Son of Confederate Veteran's arse too. My great-great-great-great grandfather served in the 31st Alabama and surrendered to Grant at Vicksburg. His older brother (my great-great-great-great uncle) served in the 14th Alabama at Gettysburg and was killed at Spotsylvania Court House on May 12, 1864.

It’s sort of like saying Larry Coker or Orgeron are the greatest football coaches bc they won with superior talent.

If Grant had stepped into command Napoleon's Grand Armee after dying unexpectedly in 1806 you might have a point. However, the Army of the Tennessee's was Grant's baby from late-1861 until the end of 1863. He trained and developed that army and led it to an undefeated record from the Battle of Belmont in November 1861 to the Battle of Chattanooga in November 1863.

Winfield Scott in the Mexican War

While he commanded a numerically inferior army, they were better trained, better led, better equipped, and better armed than his Mexican counterpart led by Santa Anna. They were also quite apathetic and broke as soon as the American force began to get the better of them in battle. So as brilliant as Winfield Scott is (easily among the Top 5 best in American history) he would be categorized in the same vein as the 20th century generals and Union commanders based on the impossible standards placed on Grant.

I thought Robert E Lee was the better general? The war would’ve been over a lot sooner if he would’ve been in command of the union army?

Based on what? If we were to do this like a head coach, using wins, losses, and ties, his battlefield record as a commanding general would have been 5 wins, 6 losses, and 9 ties (.475).

That isn't a foregone conclusion. Lee suffered an early defeat in the Western Virginia Campaign of 1861 and was banished to building up coastal defenses in the Carolinas. It took a while for a lot of these top commanders to get used to commanding large armies in the field as most were just junior officers prior to the war's outbreak with no experience in large-scale strategic movements.

You do realize that Grant has been dead for almost 139 years, do you not? I am not siding with anyone. I'm simply looking at what happened in the past and applying what I have learned about it to the subject.

He has Abe to thank…. Most other generals hated him, and couldn’t stand his drunkenness. Abe tuned out all the noise —- otherwise he would’ve never gotten to where he finished up.

It's amazing these "historians" will throw out, "butcher", in regards to Grant but refuse to say the same for Lee or Jackson. Problem is, Grant could afford it, Lee could not
