Pemberton should have been hung for treason. Or incompetence. Or pick your charge.

Possibly the single worst commander on either side during the war.

Yep. Nothing like expert testimony from a woman declared insane by the courts and moved into a mental institute. Not to mention her brother was an officer in the Confederate army.

Even before the courts declared her insane, Lincoln threatened to put her is an asylum if she didn't stop crying over Willie's death

What a loser you are.

Who's the loser? The guy teaching History in here or the multiple people, yourself included, holding on to a loss 150 years ago?

Clearly you are a military history buff. Who do most military historians think is the best general the US has had?

Good general. Absolutely a horrible president by judgement of most historians.

Is this some kind of a troll or joke? Grant isn’t even in the top 100 US military commanders (counting confederate commanders in this). The union army was twice the size as the confederate army and had the benefit of superior logistics.

Yep but he understood the strengths, bodies - materials - and logistics, and used them very well.

A pretty good general with all the advantages of unlimited weapons, ammunition, food, and men who basically waged a war of attrition against a weaker outnumbered opponent. He did what his boss wanted.

Also a war criminal, along with Lincoln and Sherman.

I admit I admire Grant for writing his memoirs battling cancer down to the wire to provide for his widow and family. That took real courage, dedication, and determination.

Kind of depends on how you define “best”.

Washington was the most tenacious and the best politician. MacArthur was seriously gifted even if he had a few huge blunders. Jackson was audacious. So on and so forth.

Grant understood modern warfare far better than any of his contemporaries - he understood the strategic, the economic / industrial, the logistical, the public relations, the political, and the social aspects of total warfare and how they all fit together much, much better than anyone else of his era and better than only a handful of others in any era. That was his ultimate gift. I don’t have any issue calling him the greatest in American history. If he’s not on top, he’s certainly on the very shortest of lists.

Ulysses S. Grant.

No single general in American history had more strategic victories and armies surrender to him. His victory at Fort Donelson opened up the Deep South to invasion and took an entire army off the board. His victory at Vicksburg split the Confederacy in two and took another army off the board. His victory at Chattanooga gave the Union complete control of the western Confederacy to the Mississippi River and opened up the road to Atlanta. And, of course, his victory over Robert E. Lee in Virginia resulted in the surrender of Lee's army and the effective end of the American Civil War.

I don’t know. It’s sort of like saying Larry Coker or Orgeron are the greatest football coaches bc they won with superior talent. I mean maybe

The Duke of Wellington was better.
BRB with stats.

He was the best at defensive battles.
He was great at logistics.
He also was a true leader who led from the front.

He also defeated Napoleon who is certainly one of the best field generals of all time.

In short, Arthur Wellesley was a badass, and that is why the Duke of Wellington is a hero for the ages.
