The wheels would keep increasing in speed until the bearings melted.

The plane doesn’t drive itself through the wheels. So the answer is that the engines would have to overcome infinity coefficient if drag by a backward moving runway on what has design limits (wheel bearings).

No they aren’t. The wheels can be moving backwards and it doesn’t matter. The plane can move forwards while the wheels rotate opposite to the planes motion as along as the force of the turbine pulling it forward exceeds the force of gravity on the plane downwards…which I imagine it can since, you know, its a plane.

Not on the treadmill. If the wheels are touching the treadmill, and speeds are matched, the plane isn't moving.

Explain to me how the plane lifts off the ground if it isn't moving.

They are saying the aircraft would still move forward.

I suppose it’s possible if the thrust is great enough.

Stick a pencil through a washer. Put the washer on a moving treadmill. Can you move the pencil forward?

False.

Let’s do a thought experiment.

If you hook up a F350 to a Prius, can the F350 pull the Prius forward?

What if all 4 wheels of the Prius were stationary and locked? The answer is yes, it could.

The only thing the wheels moving backward do is say to the planes engines “you now need to exceed the force of friction to move forward”. The engines can assuredly do that.

Not if wheels and treadmill are speed matched. If the plane is moving forward, then the planes wheels are moving faster than the treadmill.

The plane will not take off because it will be stationary relative to the ground and the air. It will essentially be like a dude running on a treadmill. So unless it is a Harrier jet, it won't take off.

The question isn't "can the plane takeoff". The question is will it. It will not.

ETA: Yes, the plane's engines can make it move forward on a treadmill. Thus, the plane has the ability to take off. However, the plane is not moving is this scenario. So, no, it will not.

If the wheels are irrelevant, how do you get air flow under the wings? If the aircraft stays stationary, there’s no air flow. Maybe I’m missing something.

You're missing how planes work.

No one is missing how planes work. I'm not sure you understand the OP.

First and foremost, any airplane needs lift, created by air moving at a high rate above and below the wing. If it does not have that, it won't fly. Does not matter how high the engines are turning.

I get it. But I also get how planes you work. I even gave you a very simple example to illustrate why the plane would move. You don't want to hear it, so I believe I'm done here.

lol, it's been awhile since I heard about the goddamn plane and the goddamn treadmill.

Good memories.

Can we do .9999999... = 1 next?

All this time, airports and aircraft carriers could have just installed a conveyor belt.

Here's an idea (pretty sure China will steal it as soon as they read my post.)

Instead pesky things like wheels and runways, just install treadmills directly onto the planes. That way they can take off and land anywhere. Revolutionize the industry and cut Big Runway out the picture

My goodness! Do people really not know what makes an airplane fly?
