I feel like mine casted an immense shadow. That i fall short of in many areas

- Unflinching innate sense of right and wrong. Little to no moral gray area
- Refused to discuss politics or religion with anyone. Ever
- Never heard him complain
- Internal alarm clock got him up at 4:30-5 every morning. 7 days a week
- Never once saw him drunk in my lifetime
- Took care of my grandparents like a saint when they got older
- Army reserves for 20 yrs, volunteer FD for 25, on top of tending to 3000 acres of farm

I surpassed him financially quite some time ago, which is meaningless. And i owe that largely to him as well

So basically i feel like a rudderless slob compared to mine sometimes such a different generation

well, mine was never around and is a huge hypocrite so i think i've got him beat. i've spent more time with my kid the first 2.5 years of his life than my dad has in mine in 32

This is the only thing my old man has on me. I have changed my beliefs over the years, he has not.

Other than that, he's pretty easy to beat in every other category, but he is a badass gramps to my kids so I'll give him that.

If you passed him financially then you're better than he ever was. That's all that matters.

He definitely got only one signing bonus and 3% raises.

You're a 7% raise type of guy.

my father grew up without a father and still managed to be an expert on being a father. i grew up with him as my father and still managed to screw it up...

I'm not even at the age he was when he had me. I know he was a nomadic, lazy, and irresponsible guy until ~35, so I'm on the right timeline and just a little bit ahead.

ETA: We both pale in comparison to my grandfather and great-grandfather. Hard to beat a guy who enlisted a day after Pearl Harbor at 17, fought in the Pacific for 3 years, came home, and started a wildly successful business.

I guess he didn't do a good job then, a father's job is to lead by example, teach right from wrong, impart as much wisdom about being a responsible person as he can, then kick your arse out of the nest, not to set up a comparison bar, sounds like you were asleep during the grow a pair lesson

Better in some ways, worse in others. I'm in much better shape than him at least.

Lets see, he’s 90, a WWII veteran, still married to my mom, I’ve always looked up to him. I’m hoping that my children will have some appreciation for me one day...

My father-quit school in the fifth grade to deliver ice to help the family get by, he was a WW2 Vet, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, was on his way to Berlin when the war ended. Returned to the US, went to a nondescript business school, and went on to develop a multi million dollar business.

I’m not qualified to polish my fathers shoes.

He comes to me for advice, cannabis and to try to feel young again.

He wanted to go on the last tour I was part of and drive the bus.

lol I'd say pretty well.

But the person who actually raised me..I'll never be able to fill those shoes. I'll never come close.

He and my mother's father are my two heroes/role models.

Between the two of them I was taught right from wrong, kindness, fairness, sportsmanship, how to hunt and fish, how to woodwork, how to treat a lady, how to play the saxophone, and so much more.

My dad turned 78 in November, he retired from the landman business several years ago with a healthy investment portfolio, and still plays sax in 2-3 different swamp pop bands in the Baton Rouge area. He's cooler than I'll ever be.

But, he still holds some racists beliefs that are a product of his generation and he can be negative sometimes. He is quick to judge and stubborn as a mule sometimes.

I think I'm doing OK, and trying to be what he is mixed with what I am. I try to take the best of who he is, who my Paw Paw was, and temper it with my own personality.

It ain't always easy but I know it's the high road and the right path.
