Bump & good morning.

Since we are on the topic of experimental planes, what is this?

I have not the foggiest. I've done a lot of reading on experimental aircraft but I don't remember ever seeing anything about that.

When?

It's got to be the late 50's or early 60's.

Whats going on, Darth?

It is the Hiller X-18.

quote:

The X-18 was an experimental cargo-transport aircraft designed to be the first testbed for tilt-wing and STOVL (short takeoff and vertical landing) technology. The Hiller Aircraft Corporation began design work in 1955 and received a manufacturing contract and funding from the Air Force, resulting in the only X-18 ever produced.

Doing the Friday thing.

I suspected it was a cargo plane due to the shape of the fuselage. That's cool.

Try this one....

What does that thing at the top of his sleeve denote?

Ah, one of the true odd balls of the 50's. That's the F-107. Just an ugly thing if you ask me.

Oh, he's just a nameless solider of the Wehrmacht. The question is about the thing at the top of his sleeve where it meets his shoulder. What was it called and what did it denote?

This was going to be the successor to the F-100 Super Sabre.

I don't know...but it kind of reminds me of those red and white striped under-belly painted FW190D's...

I don't know what it's called, but he's a bandsmen/musician.

Exactly. Those things denote that the guy wearing them is a musician. They were called "swallow's nests".

And while we're on the topic of German uniforms.

What's hanging around their necks and what's their purpose?

Here's another example...

BONUS: Can you identify this guy's unit and what sets him apart from most other German soldiers?

Sorry got tied up here at work. What those German soldiers are wearing are called " gorgets". They've been around for a long time and have many different meanings but for the Germans, they denote Military Police.

As for the guy in the second picture. He's not a member of the Wehrmacht but instead is a member of the Waffen SS serving in the 13th Waffen SS Mountain Division. What made this guy different from the average German solider is that he is a Muslim. The 13th SS was made up almost entirely of Muslims from Croatia.

And what was the German soldier's nickname for their military police?
