that's a woodburner - converted the gas released from burning wood/coal to use in an internal combustion engine.

You got it.

during WWII in Europe & Japan due to fuel shortages many vehicles were converted to burn wood or coal.

The ones towards the stern are Martin Torpedo bombers. Probably T4Ms because they look like they've got radial engines and the T3M had an in-line.

The fighters are either Boeing F4Bs or Curtiss Goshawks. Both were used by the Navy in the 1930s and the photo doesn't have detail to tell for sure.

There should also be some Vought Corsairs (obviously the original scout, not the gull wing fighter) somewhere in the mix. They were still in use when WW2 started.

No. Aside from the wings being wrong, the Barrels had fatter fuselages, enclosed cockpits, and gear that retracts forward of the lower wing.

Those fighters have open cockpits and fixed gear right below the wing.

They're Curtis or Boeing fighters, not Grummans.

That's a Martin Mauler. She was one of the last piston engine attack aircraft of the Navy. As for her load-out, those look like .5" rockets under her wings but the other three, I have no idea? Torpedoes? That's just a guess and not a good one... they don't look long enough to me.

Correct, sir. I think the ones besides the rockets are airiel depth charges - I put it up because I wanted to know...

Thanks. I find the OT's obsession on trashiness to be borderline gay as shite.

not many.

Hitler went from private in a reserve Bavarian infantry regiment to Fuhrer of Germany. And Nathan Bedford Forrest went from Private to Lieutenant General for the CSA. Those two come to mind right away..

ONLY man, on the southern side, anyway, to enlist as a Private and come out of the was a General.

Of course, he went in as a millionaire, and came out a pauper.
