1. Why?

2. How costly?

If a prescription costs $1200/month, a mere 10k people taking it would net $144 million a year.

The pharma companies are investing in expensive R&D on all kinds of medicines, most of which never work out. THAT must be paid for as well.

We have a free market system, so if pharma companies are making too much money more pharma companies will spring into existence to compete and drive prices down. The problem is that our approval process is so slow that competition is artificially kept off the market for too long. Also, patents protect them from competition.

The drugs that are expensive are newer drugs that are still protected from competition by patents. If you regulate away these huge profits, then the drugs will never be invented in the first place.

My son takes one that is $5500 a month and another that is around $9000. I get both for $0 with insurance and manufacturer coupons.

Agreed. I think the other poster assumed you were advising to do these things instead of meds.

Overnight hospital stay for "observation"? $15,000.

May be the charged rate but definitely not the reimbursed rate

But when the process is sped up, people cry about the government wanting to inject you with poison.

feel a little guilty taking such expensive meds.

Don’t. Insurance companies are structured to plan around the occasional expense such as this. On top of that they screw over people people regularly so don’t feel bad for taking their money

My cancer med copay is $3600 for 30 days and I’m on Medicare part D. Donut hole sucks. It will only cost about $600 per month once I hit catastrophic coverage.

Trump was in progress of doing something about this, but retarded Karens couldn't handle a few mean tweets.

Not taking medicine because of a price you don’t have to pay is one of the dumbest things I’ve read on this site.

I take Creon (pancreatic enzymes) and it was 2500 for the first month. Found a manufacturer’s coupon and paid 5. The coupon was supposed to work for 12 months but it didn’t. I have Rx insurance but my deductible applies first.

Yes because the only way to help anyone nowadays is to just stuff them full of chemicals in a pill form.

There's three newer 2nd generation antipsychotics still on patent: Rexulti, Latuda and Vraylar. All of them run about $1,200 a month.

All are approved for schizophrenia. Vraylar and Latuda passed trials for Bipolar. (Rexulti failed its bipolar trial). Rexulti and Latuda both passed trials for major depression (not sure about Vraylar).

Anyway, I was on Rexulti and I gained about 15 lbs in less than a month. I said frick this and stopped. I then tried Latuda and it gave me terrible akathisia. Now I am on Vraylar and no weight gain and no akathesia. So far I am happy.

(Bipolar type 1 here).

Everyone should use the GoodRx app which gives you potential discounts on prescription medications.
