I read and write work and have two little insane kids and a wilderness compound to tend to. If I didn’t have audiobooks i would hardly be able to read. I do an audiobook a week (more or less depending on length and density).

I’ve been doing audiobooks for 35 years now. My retention is no less than actual reading.

Who is keeping score?

No. You don't get the credit if you didn't literally read the book. I'll be damned if someone cheapens my feat of actually reading The Brothers Karamazov.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I must conduct some "research" by Googling.

Yes.

I want people to think I'm smarter than I actually am.

If it was unabridged and I actually listen to it with the same concentration I devote to reading then I don't make a distinction unless I am giving someone a rec about an audiobook where the reader did a great job.

It isn't like I am flexing by implying I can read unless it was The Iliad in Homeric Greek or War and Peace in Russian.

It ain’t high school, listening to books is allowed and the result it pretty similar.

Now if you emphasize read to make yourself seem better and obscure that you actually listened, it’s kinda lame.

Listening to an audio book is like fricking the tinder date and moving on. Reading a book is like dating 3 months then fricking then placing it on a shelf.

Hard to read a book while driving on a long road trip. I get the information either way, so why should it matter?

I have always been a big reader my entire life. Once I got into my late 40, my eyesight diminished as it does with many people. I don’t require glasses for normal activity but do need them for reading. Now even with readers, if I read for too long at a stretch it gives me a headache. I have found audio books allow me to keep enjoying books without the discomfort.
Considering most people these days don’t read or listen to books, I wouldn’t be putting down anyone who did either.

I say I listened to a book but idgaf what somwbody else says. You're still absorbing the info or story.

I love how accessible they are. I drive a lot so I get to listen to a lot of books.

At first glance I thought your username was Bad9sex.

On topic- yes- listening to an audio book counts as having read the book, but I tend to say “I listened to such and such book” if I’m discussing that book with someone else.

It’s not enough of a thing the split hairs over though. You need some wine to take that edge off?

What does it matter as long as I can discuss the book?

If I’m blind can I say I read a book if it was in braille or do I need to say I fingered it?

Yes because I give zero value to anyone who has an opinion to differentiate the two. It's not that important enough for a detail to me and if it is to someone else, I don't care anyway.

No need to waste anyone's time explaining or changing the context of a story to note that irrelevant different UNLESS the difference is the story. For example....things to listen to while traveling, cutting the grass, etc.

Yes.

No distinction, if content is consumed.

If a speaker asks a crowd for a show of hands who has read a certain book, I’d raise my hand if I had only listened to it. Because he’s probably just asking who knows the content of it.
