An area can petition to leave a city in order to either revert to being unincorporated or join another municipality.

Yeah. But it’s not an easy process. And just requesting to be annexed or withdraw from the city doesn’t guarantee it will be granted.

What would be hilarious is if St. George doesn’t let a place like United Plaza withdraw for the same reason that BR tried to fight the new city - because it would cause an economic hardship

quote:

A.(1)(a)(i) No ordinance enlarging the boundaries of a municipality shall be valid unless, prior to the adoption thereof, a petition has been presented to the governing body of a municipality containing the written assent of a majority of the registered voters and a majority in number of the resident property owners as well as twenty-five percent in value of the property of the resident property owners within the area proposed to be included in the corporate limits, all according to the certificates of the parish assessor and parish registrar of voters

Watched it last night. Gonna be interesting to see how the organizers for lack of a better word can handle public meetings/transparency.

Watched the whole thing. You could tell Murrell was trying his best to take the high road but he couldn’t resist taking a couple shots at the Better Together crooks. After the last 11 years I can’t blame him.

Sure would be sweet for a lump pay-day to start the city if they get the tax revenue paid since the the day of incorporation.

Yeah. That would be a hefty sum somewhere between zero and around 200 million I'd guess.

Indeed. These dudes didn't forget anything. They're making damn sure that every strike against them over the past 11 years was noted and now pointed out. And you know what? They've damn well earned the right to spike the football.

Mayor Broome needs to show up with her hat in hand. The shoe is pretty squarely on the other foot now.

She just watched any chance of her getting reelected go down the drain. Mayor Broome knows she's done.

Awesome news! Now we need to get on establishing architectural guides, building/signage requirements, and zoning rules ASAP. I want this thing to look like Madison, MS and 30a had a baby.

This. Parts of St. George, mainly along Coursey Boulevard near Stumberg are starting to get a Gardere area vibe.

A big part of this is her fault. And if this turns out to be financially destructive to the city of Baton Rouge, she will go down as the worst mayor in history. She's already there without the St. George debacle IMO.

She was one of the senators that pushed back against the independent school district that was initially proposed. The opposition to the new ISD cited that the district wasn't even part of its own city. That's what kick started this whole incorporation push.

SG is not yet in the school business.

It may take years, but when this happens, the district will pull a lot of kids (and the funding that goes with them) away from EBRPPS. It's not beyond that school board to vindictively cancel or water down Baton Rouge Magnet High as a response.

If St. George schools prove to be competitive, some private schools are going to struggle to attract students.

Most of that will still be city of Baton Rouge. I think Stumberg is the boundary.

I'd be shocked if the consolidated city-parish government makes it another five years.

Wouldn't that come to a parish-wide vote?

I could see there being push back from Baton Rouge towards maintaining the consolidated government, but that may not be enough anymore.

I find this whole thing fascenating and I'm excited to see how it plays out.

I'm squarely in the "get me out of this state ASAP" camp, however this is the first development I see where it could make something cool and exciting. I'm sure the crabs which are BR and LA will drag it back into the crab bucket. BUT I am legit hopeful that you could see a boom of growth, good schools and nice new development.

I remember when I moved here at Siegen Lane was on the uptick. New shopping being built. not only has that area declined (which is somewhat normal) but it's like the city forgot to build a new section of retail growth.

I've never been to a city that had ZERO nice new part of town. There's always a growing side with new development. Not Baton Rouge.

Sherwood Place Apartments right near there are massive and ghetto as hell now.

The new stuff on Pecue Lane probably will look like that. It will take a long time for the other stuff to evolve. Parts of St. George are already far more densely populated and more developed than Madison. Once it's developed, it's hard to add in more strict setbacks although aesthetic rules and signage are definitely going to happen I'm sure.

They are even updating the signage rules and dismantling old abandoned tower signs in Baton Rouge.
