On August 18th 1976, two American soldiers were set upon and hacked to death by North Korean soldiers for the crime of pruning a poplar tree that was on the South Korean side of the border.

Their names were Arthur Bonifas and Mark Barrett.

In response, President Ford ordered a show of force.

Several companies of US Infantry and South Korean troops were ordered to the site of the killings, while over 12,000 additional troops were ordered to be sent to the area.

In the background, US helicopters and aircraft circled while B52 stratofortress bombers were on station.

A company of US troops went to the tree that the murdered men had been pruning and chopped the tree down while North Korea troops watched.

The show of force worked, as for the first time since the 1953 Armistice the North Korean government took responsibility for the incident and issued an apology.

Fun fact: future South Korean president Moon Jae-in was part of the South Korean detachment for the operation and later visited the monument built to honor the fallen men.

"Our American brother's in arms paid the ultimate price for their vigilance against the evil of Communism. May their sacrifice never be forgotten."

God bless Gerald Ford, one of few competent presidents who was also a good guy.

Weird first post, especially for an event that happened so long ago, and not on its anniversary.

Competent during his term maybe as well as a good guy I guess. Ford was also a member of the Warren Commission and as complicit in the coverup of the John F. Kennedy assassination investigation as anyone else involved. Deep state stooge like all the rest.

I remember reading about that in The Long Grey Line. Art Bonifas was a graduate of the class of 1966.

Maybe so, but it is more than LBJ did fifty six years ago yesterday when the Pueblo was seized by North Korean forces.

And interestingly enough, he served as Vice President AND President, although he was elected to neither office.

And why were they doing this? Seems odd. SK's overreacted for sure.

And to think that the media back then portrayed him as a clutz who couldn’t walk down a flight of stairs.

What is odd about it? The tree was blocking line of site between an observation post on the SK side of the border and a UN/SK guard station at the Bridge of No Return.

And what are you saying that SK did to overreact?

If a president from the “wrong” party did this today the would be labeled a war monger and people would bitch about the money spent for a meaningless act.
