Not the test itself, but how it's graded. Someone I know is taking it for the 3rd time because he can't pass the speaking portion of it despite scoring high in every other section. It turns out the speaking portion is "graded" by recording a 60 second clip of you speaking and a speech-to-text AI analyzes it and gives you a score.

I tried it myself on his practice module and as a native English speaker, I couldn't even get the score the AI wanted for a passing grade. It'd mishear words, run on sentences that were clearly stopped, and all that tanks your score. Why are we letting some janky arse system gatekeep people who are going through the proper channels to actually come be productive in this country?

Because it’s run by the government?

And some government bureaucrats cousin got paid a crap load of money to build this software (even though they probably had no expertise in building language software)

Because we are more interested in lowering overhead and bank rolling some tech company than doing a good job at......anything.

On a side note, I'd hate to learn English as a second language.

All of the slang and everything has to be ultra confusing.

Those never work.

At my previous job I would get a transcript of my voicemail and it would make Otto posts look coherent. When I listened it was clear as a bell.

My in laws took it in the 90's, said it was pretty easy if you had been in the country for 4 or 5 years and interact with natives. Can't imagine having to use a software.
