Electricity cheaper than gas?

Gonna save the planet from climate change?

Sick of going to the gas station?

Better commuter vehicle than gas powered?

Low maintenance?

Backfeed the power grid so there’s never a power outage

Same reason people are buying battery lawn equipment. Easier to use and less maintenance if you have a small yard.

EVs make sense if you don’t drive far.

Wife is looking at a Q5e plug-in hybrid. These seem like the best if both worlds to me. 35 mile all electric range that can switch to a regular combustion engine after that for the few times you need to drive further.

I'll always have some sort of non-EV truck for towing since that kills your range

Absolutely. My electric car will save the world from your redneck gas powered truck! But please don’t tell me about how my electricity is generated from burning coal, which is much worse for the environment! I’m trying to virtue signal here!

I’d guess it breaks down something like this for most EV purchases:

90-95% - Virtue signaling by indoctrinated sheep who foolishly think they’re “doing their part to save the planet”.

5-10% - people who do not drive far on a daily basis who, after weighing the pros & cons, decided buying an EV makes sense in their situation from an economic standpoint.

A great daily driver if your commute isn’t far.

Not great for long distance traveling until they have a legit charging infrastructure set up, but you’re still sitting there for an hour every time you need to stop to recharge on the trip.

If there was a Corolla-priced EV, I’d consider it. I drive about 100 miles each day. The time it would take to put the plug on it each night would be less than my time spent at gas stations each day.
Further, a little bit less maintenance, as there is no oil to change on an electric motor
Fewer moving parts.
I would bet that the average motor is going to last longer than the average gas motor

But they’re way too expensive, generally ugly, the backside battery cost/replacement would probably negate the more durable motor

If there were a $25,000, 200-250 (actual, not estimated) range vehicle with bare minimum amenities (cruise, +/- adaptive cruise but likely without it, Bluetooth/line in sound, some form of “standardized” cell that is user swappable in the future), I would heavily consider one as an additional vehicle, but I wouldn’t replace one with it.

In some places you get a crazy nice parking spot if you've got a plug-in vehicle.

But not here.

As EVs, home battery storage, and solar get more common, the grid will morph into a set of micro-grids rather than larger grid segments with more centralized generation like we have now. Things like tree limbs breaking lines will knock out power to fewer and fewer people.

And if you have power generation and storage on and with your own personal property, it doesn't matter what happens to the grid.
