I'm a little hobbled right now with recovering from ankle fusion surgery and not getting around nearly as fluidly as I normally would. If on my feet for a while I'm either in a walking boot or on crutches to get around.
I've had folks in cars stop for me to make my way into stores from the parking lots or let me cross a street and to show my appreciation for their thoughtfulness I'll give them a wave of appreciation or a quick "Thank You".

yes to both - it is just a fair courtesy back to them - most times people do not even slow down.

Every single time. I do it when in traffic too when someone lets me go.
If someone holds the door for me, I shake their hand, tell them thanks and have a nice day. I make my young boys do it too.
