In the case of the women, makeup has SPF in it now.

Those actors were adults playing adult roles on a show aimed at adults. That kind of audience doesn't exist any more. Networks cater to the only people who regularly watch their shows now, teens and early twentysomethings, and the characters reflect that. The same actors at that age now would be wearing clothes and makeup to look younger.

Whenever “Cocoon” came out in 1985, Wilford Brimley was about the same age as Tom Cruise was whenever “Ghost Protocol” (2011) came out (~50 years old). Cruise is 59 this year.

Redd Foxx was 49 the first season of Sanford & Son.

I have seen my family members yearbooks from the 80s. The seniors looked much older back then. The dudes looked like they were 30 years old.

The idea in the 80's was to grow up and be as independent as possible. People tried to look adult in their teens.

“People were so independent and mature that they intentially looked like objective shite and closer to death than healthy younger looking people today”

Is one of the most boomer things I’ve ever read.

By reading all this ridiculous explanations and hypothesis, the conclusion is very simple: The way they dressed back then made them look older, for both men and women.

Mostly smoking, but celebs in the 1970s and 1980s were also rocking the fine white powder quite a bit.

And that's not super good for your appearance, either.

Could also just be a bad picture. I think Danson and Long look insanely young in this pic.

the picture was taken in 1983. didn't confirm ages

If it was taken in 1983, those ages should be one number higher, otherwise, they're accurate.

A lot of it is smoking. Being around that all day especially inside, kills your body. Skin is particularly affected.

Few today realize how prevalent it was when baby boomers were growing up. I’m 66, as a kid I lived in a house with parents that if they were awake they were smoking in the house. We traveled in a closed car while they smoked. Go to the movies every adult around you was smoking. Same for the workplace, most offices had a blue cloud hanging from the ceiling. there were no non-smoking hotel rooms, the worst was having to fly and the last seat available was in the smoking section. Airplane mechanics would locate door seal leaks by looking for tar/nicotine stains around the door.

Cheers ran for about a decade. I think I’m mentally thinking of their older selves toward end of the show when looking at this pic.

Agree that Cliff & Coach do look older here also.

I don't believe those ages...

Neither did I but if that picture is from season 1 then they are accurate.

The realization that I am closest in age to Coach is a real slap in the face.
