re: Best .270 Ammo?

I’ve never had an issue with the 130g Hornady SST out of my 270. Every deer I’ve shot with that round has been cleaned and brought to the table.
I’m aware of better bullets on the market now, but I have 125 of them or so reloaded in my supply. With two young boys hunting now, I don’t have the fire to kill multiple deer per year. Sitting beside them in a stand gives me much more pleasure than me killing one by myself.

I love all the fancy new calibers, but any of your dads/grandpas calibers with a core lokt is so dang effective at killing whitetails under 200 yards.

I’ve used 140 grain Hornady SST bullets for several decades. My Model 70 really likes them and I stocked up before everything became so hard to find.
Only had two occasions without an exit, both on racked bucks. One, I never found. The other went a few hundred yards, when we found him, his chest cavity was like a water ballon filled with blood.
Now, as I have gotten older and less enthused about dragging out a runner, I take neck shots only. Maybe shooting a trophy I would switch back to the boiler room, but for meat hunts, I want them to drop where they stand so I can drive up to them.

I bought my 270 in 1983---700 adl--I don't deer hunt much any more but did for 25 years---never trailed a deer regardless of the bullet. I take only neck shots and have never really had any trouble getting neck shots. I have never even considered another rifle.

Dad? That you?
My dad bought this same rifle around this time. 130gr rem core lokts work best for our rifle. Hornadys have a mind of their own out this barrel

I had several bad experiences with the Core Lokt .270s. Perfect shot placements that still led to no blood trails, or light blood trail making recovery hard. Wasn’t getting good pass throughs etc. Switched to Federal Fusion 150grains and they started taking dirt naps right where they were hit. The one that did go about 30 yards was gushing blood. The Fusion bullets seemed to stay together better to get a pass through. The Core Lokts broke apart too rapidly.

Love those Hornady 140 BTSP- dropped a stag at 200+ yds dead in his tracks.

I shoot SST out of my Grendel.
Consistent exit holes and blood everywhere.
You’ve gotta get out of the shoulder and get back in the lungs.

The core lokts don’t usually break apart from what I’ve seen. They usually look exactly like the mushroom picture on the box. They penetrate everything but stop inside the hide on the opposite side. Because of this I’m not a fan.

Neck or high shoulder here, .243 or .270. The high shoulder gives a little more room for error if I'm not braced on something. Muscles and eyes aren't as rock steady as they used to be.
I know a family with high fence land and they take neck shots with .223 almost exclusively. Now they aren't northern Kentucky monsters, these are smallish NW Florida deer and you can wait for a good shot (or not take one), but shot placement trumps caliber.

I can't even remember all the various rounds I put through it. I just know if I am patient and take the shot the 270 will do the job.

It really does matter, as well as distance of your shots. Some bullets will do better at distance while others will out perform those close in, but suck long range.
There are too many options on the market.

Yep. It's REALLY close to perfect but not quite. I want exits.
The guys out west don't worry about exit holes at all. Don't particularly want one. They want zero energy wasted.

What about the Hornady CX bullet in the Outfitter ammo? I picked up a box last year in .30-06 to use in my Weatherby. It shot absolutely dead on, the bullet seemed to just pass right through with little carnage. Shot a doe at 252 yards and she ran 10 yards.

Hornady has a new 145 ELDX in Precision Hunter out, think I'm going to try it next
Shot a box of these, now I use them in my reloads. Only thing that compares to a SST is speed/BC, damage is like a bonded bullet. Never had one not pass through a shoulder/spine/rib cage.
I never recall any of the deer I have hit in the shoulder moving. Bang flop. Behind the shoulder they will run and not bleed well initially, then blow open.

Maybe your shot placement was poor?

All my dad has ever shot out of his. Hell it’s what I typically shoot out of my 308.
Honestly 99.9% of people that hunt in Louisiana or Mississippi and most of Texas will never be faced with a shot longer than 200yds. And of those the majority of them will be less than 100. Ballistics in any modern rifle cartridge don’t matter at that range with whitetails.
You doing a western hunt? That’s a different story.
