I started seeing Indigo Buntings yesterday. Is anyone else starting to see colorful songbirds?

Two days ago I saw a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak.

All other colorfuls are the norm, Cardinals, Blue Birds etc.

I could have sworn I saw an Indigo Bunting the other day but I didn't get a good enough look to confirm. They are only migratory here in the panhandle.

Not so much a songbird, but I have a pair of House Finches that have set up a nest with 5 hatched eggs right in the middle of a hanging fern on my front porch.

The male's call is short but very melodic as he watches over the nest and the female heads out to find things for the babies to eat. That nest is right outside my front door and I can hear them all day long as they come and go.

We're in the tail end of the spring migration here in the Florida Panhandle. In the last few weeks I've seen the following migrants: blue grosbeak, rose-breasted grosbeak, summer tanager, an oriole (likely an immature Altamira Oriole but not certain), Northern Parula, Eastern Kingbird, Great-Crested Flycatchers and a blackburnian warbler.

Lots of buntings. Unfortunately, I see one for every 20 I hear.

Male Indigo Bunting

I've seen one in my life. About two years ago in a bush by the front window. Also had a Blue Grosbeak fly into a window and sit stunned on the porch for about 45 minutes. I've noted I've also seen Rose Breasted Grosbeaks but they are rare. Last year a male and female Summer Tanager flew into the front window. The female expired but the male finally woke up and flew away. Those are the infrequents I've seen here in East Texas. I love it when I see a rare one.

Our living room is mostly glass, so we've had more than our fair share of window strikes. Finally put up some stickers this spring and it's made a big difference. No strikes at all on the windows with the stickers. They even fly into windows with screens in them, but not the glass with these dots.

We have two Baltimore Orioles that have been here for about two weeks. They nest in a pecan tree. This is the second year they have used the same nest.

Not songbirds but last Saturday I drove into the parking lot at the recreational facility on Picard Road in Sulphur and watched a pair of Scissor-tailed Kites circling for about five minutes.

I get to see painted Buntings maybe 2-3 times a year. Have a lot of tree crp next to mature hardwoods and then grass crp and I guess the buntings like that environment. Summer tanagers and warblers are abundant here. Haven’t seen a warbler yet though.

One of life’s regrets is shooting a male painted bunting when I was about 10. I thought it must have been an exotic that escaped from the pet store or someone’s house, so I shot it with my pellet gun. Later in life I learned I fricked up doing that.

I shot a male cardinal when I was a kid. And my mom and dad heard it and saw it drop as it was in clear view of a large glass door. Yeah, I still regret that just as you do.

Yes, bunches of indigos lately.

Painted buntings are pretty tough to spot I think, I’ve seen one maybe two and they don’t sit still long.

I think I have a Goldfinch that has a nest but my quick google search led me to believe they aren’t common here

American Goldfinch winter down here but wouldn't be nesting here. Tell us a bit more about the bird and nest
