Kids in religious families have fared better in the smartphone era, with smaller rises in mental illness. @ZachMRausch and I believe it is primarily due to being anchored in real-world communities with rituals and obligations, low anomie.

The data is jarring. Mental health issues are *78%* higher among non religious families.
This is what, in my view, atheists and agnostics did not foresee when they became a dominant force in the early 2000s. They focused the debate solely on the issue of reason, faith, philosophy, etc. they did not focus on real world effects of ditching religion such as decline in community, decline in youth groups, feeling belonged, etc.
It is my personal belief that there are 2 main culprits of the mental Health crisis among our youth
1) smart phones
2) the atheist movement ripping away youth activity/involvement/extracurriculars without replacing them with secular alternatives
I vividly remember the famous agnostics of the early 2000s ensuring us that the ongoing decline in religion among the youth would be the best thing to happen to the world
Can anyone honestly argue they were right?
Instead of ditching faith, the agnostic youth have simply found new forms of faith/meaning (trans activism, Identity based living, Black Lives Matter, etc). None of these movements are anymore reason-based than religious activity
There is a long literature on the protective effects of religion on wellbeing going back to when forma social science research began. It is only surprising because academia is so aggressively anti-religious that these protective effects are not as widely known as they should be.

Classic values and family atmospheres lead to better outcomes in children? Shocker.
Too bad half the country doesnt understand this.

This is why I am not a doomer in regards to the future.
Eventually, all the listless, self loathing types will fade away from the gene pool (either through anti-natalism, suicide, or trooning out) , leaving only level headed religious folks left.

My kids will have to make the decision whether to follow Christ or not on their own.
But they know they will never find peace and contentment if their relationship with Him is not good.

It's not religious and non-religious. What they're calling "non-religious" includes people who have made progressive/woke viewpoints their religion.
Many of those people are completely f'd up in the head because that's the nature of those viewpoints. They haven't removed religion; they've replaced it with their own version.
I'd be willing to bet people who are neither religious in the common use of the term nor adherents to some crazy leftist nonsense are probably not that far off from the "religious" category.

Is that right around the time when the Christian population in this country had a huge drop from 81% to 78%?

1) smart phones
99% of health problems are caused by society's selfishness.

The destruction of the nuclear family is the death knell of our culture. Part of that destruction is the collapse of organized religion participation.

Anyone with a brain can read the Gospels of Jesus Christ and know that is a great blueprint for Society.
I'm not suggesting that is being Preached by Prosperity Gospel thugs.

I am not religious now. But I can look back and see where growing up religious helped me a lot. Old school Catholicism taught me that I was going to hell so I developed an early sense of guilt for doing anything wrong (especially when I knew I could get away with it) because God would see me do it.
To this day I still have a strong avoidance of self guilt.

quote:Then I would urge you to know that you are guilty before God for breaking His law, but have a savior in Jesus Christ. The solution to guilt is not to hide it away, but to confess it to God and ask for forgiveness through Jesus. If done by faith, your sins will be forgiven and the guilt will be gone.
To this day I still have a strong avoidance of self guilt.

Wow, who would've thunk it? When we live the way the Creator intended, everything comes alive and people prosper.

Show us on the doll where the gay priest touched you, you soft punk.
Seriously, I've never seen someone so compelled to let everyone know they don't believe in God.
Tell us all what happened in your past to make you such an anti-Christian, stark raving mad puzzy....

This tracks for me.
I find there is an entitlement that’s pervasive in non-religious people. They feel entitled to a cushy life of abundance and ease because why else would anyone exist if not for comfort? They don’t understand the concept of having a cross to bear or that suffering is unavoidable and healthy.

Christians are weird.
You know you don't have to be miserable, right?
