NEW YORK (Reuters) - Several U.S. states sued the Trump administration on Wednesday, seeking to undo its recent decision to relax standards for restricting sodium content and requiring whole grains in school breakfasts and lunches.

In a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, the states accused the U.S. Department of Agriculture of acting in an “arbitrary and capricious” manner in easing rules championed by former first lady Michelle Obama to make school lunches healthier.

The lawsuit was filed by New York, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Vermont and the District of Columbia.

Such a weird lawsuit. The people feel harmed because rules were removed and they have more freedom? So weird.

If the schools choose to serve “healthier” lunches they’re free to do so correct? If that’s the case what’s the point in filing a lawsuit?

Can’t those states just pass their own laws requiring healthy school lunches? Or, even easier still, serve healthy school lunches without the need for federal regulations telling them to do so?

I guess I don't see what prevents the states litigating this from simply providing meals by the old rules.

Wait...so they are filing a lawsuit to make other states be held to their standards? The regulations were eased which means to me....you can always exceed them if you wish.

Not sure why the liberals care about how healthy school lunches are. If they had their way the kids would be killed at birth

I'm not a fan of Trump and dislike more than a few of his domestic policies, but for one party to constantly berate him for "disrupting norms" and acting outside of convention then for that party to paralyze all governance of the country with acrimonious law suits over every executive action, no matter how small or mundane is truly beyond belief. The hypocrisy is fricking palpable.

This is stupid!, if the states wont to keep the old rules nothing is stopping them. My wife and I are teachers and we see what our kids eat everyday and most days its pretty bad. At the elementary level the kids have to get a plate of food no matter if they want it or not. Many of her kids get their plate, throw it in the trash, and buy 4 bags of chips that they eat for lunch.

At least at my students (high school) get some choices other than just hot lunch but still most of it is like eating card board that a Yankee cooked and seasoned.

No one was ever getting fat from school lunches prior to Michelle Obama. Kids were fat as frick because of what they were snacking on or eating after and before school.

I went to a small private elementary school that served McDonalds/Subway/Sonic/Picadilly 3-4x a week and fat kids were rare. Probably because our parents weren't feeding us crap after school or failing to supervise us.

So they are suing because the government is not telling them what to eat?

Those States are free to keep their dumb rules in effect.

Why are those States denying choice to other States?
