The dunes are made from sand. The first 40 feet of the mine is overburden until the get to the phosphate rock ore so they used the sand from the overburden to make the dunes. The gypsum is the byproduct of phosphoric acid production which is the large stacks you see around central and in Convent, LA...

Mosaic turned an old phosphate mine into two golf courses. They have to reclaim the land once a mine closes. They normally just turn it into a wildlife habitat but they took this to another level. ...
