And create an environment at the us open where Even par is a winner and an incredible score with players complaining about how hard it is like the old days. But with how good these guys are, is this even possible?

Yes it’s possible, the problem is no one has the balls to make the courses like this because they’re scared of the backlash from the players and the tour

It's all in the pin placements at Pinehurst. there is no rough in a real sense there, and even when there was before the restoration, the USGA didn't grow it to US Open norms. On most of the greens there, the pins are either rather easy or brutal.

I think it comes down to something the USGA can’t control: rain. If it’s dry prior to the tournament, they’ll have it playing hard and fast. If not, greens will be soft.

There’s no real rough at #2. The greens and fairways will be lightning fast if the conditions are right, depends on weather but like Augusta the only defense is the greens and surrounds

We’ll see what it’s like this year. Kaymer was on an unbelievable heater in 2014 when he won by 8. The course played exactly how you want for every other player and was a bloodbath on the weekend. Same goes for Winged Foot in 2020 and Bryson playing out of his mind.

I still feel like the traditional US Open courses—Winged Foot, Oakmont, Shinnecock, The Country Club—have held up well and been great tests recently.

The Country Club actually coughed up some low scores in 1988, but it's come back to Earth recently.

I agree with you, the traditional courses for the open are the best. Even Baltusrol despite its low scores and crazy finish with both Par 5's on 17 and 18.

Players hit too well out of the natural areas at Pinehurst. It's not really that much of an issue for them.

Last few US Open Winners at Pinehurst:
1999 -1
2005 E
2014 -9 (won by 8 strokes)

I expect them to get the course playing tough

Absolutely.

Just remembering impossible US Opens, one of the GOAT courses from hell was Shinnecock in 2004. That thing was evil.

I was there at the final round in 2014. Kaymer made it boring.

I just read up on Pinehurst #2 a bit.
It looks pretty tough.

Bermuda greens will be lightning fast.
They are expecting it to roll at 13+

The fairways give way to natural sand dunes and well, here's a pic:

Those greens have so much undulation and spots where you’ll degreen a putt it’s unbelievable, our greens usually roll around 11 on “fast” tournament days…..#2 was faster than that on a random Thursday last august. My caddy laughed when we talked about expectations for the open, he said the fairways would be rolling 10-11 lol

The green complexes are what will make Pinehurst difficult

I played 2 college tournaments there in the 90s. When they get it playing firm and fast it can be nearly impossible. The precision required to hold the green near some hole locations is mind-boggling. It was only running 11 or so when I played it and I witnessed several players putt the ball off the green.

Roll it short, rolls back.
Roll it long, rolls away.

Played #2 recently.

I have a hard time seeing them struggling with it but past scores have not been low at all. Quite the opposite.

If you miss the fairway you’ll have to hope for some luck, as there are little bushes everywhere. I play poorly at #2 and never once had an issue getting to the back of the ball or finding a good line to the green. It wasn’t too punitive.

The greens are amazing and very tough. Best putting performance I’ve ever had. We played #5 the day before and they explained they’d just put in new greens and they were hilariously fast. They indeed were, so #2 was a walk in the park comparatively.

I can’t wait to see how the pros do.
