The only data that ATF collects on gun sales are multiple sales. FFLs have been required to submit records of these sales since 1968. This is nothing new. If you don’t want ATF to have record of your gun purchases don’t buy 2 or more handguns from same retailer in the same week.

It was reported last week that the ATF had a digital database of 900,000,000 background checks.
Digital which are entirely illegal.
