Yes in modern history Ukraine has not been part of todays Russia. They were however a founding member of the USSR. My point is Putin is attempting to bring the former Soviet States back under one umbrella. The same thing would happen if a US state tried to leave our union.

A number of those former Soviet republics were independent countries before being shanghaied into membership in the USSR.

The Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia come to mind.

This is not a good comparison.

In order to be accurate, the Union would have to fail having Hawaii or Alaska separate from the Union. Then a sitting US President would have to declare war, invade, kill off their elected governments and instill one favorable to the US.

No, I don't think that would happen and I would not support it if it did.
