My little brother will be attending LSU in the fall and will be majoring in Construction Management.

Was wondering if anyone that has this degree or knows of anything about this degree can tell me about it.

Who are the big companies that hire? What type of jobs can a new grad expect? Industrial vs. Residential vs. Commercial, what kind of salary can you expect right after graduating vs. 5 years down the road, etc.

Wants to work in Louisiana too.

It actually doesn't seem like a bad field in LA with all of the heavy industry around this area.

My dad is retired now but he made a good living with a CM degree.

When I went through the program 10 years ago, we were cross-trained in residential, commercial and industrial. I believe they have to declare a specialty these days, but I'm not 100% on that. I've worked in commercial as well as heavy industrial, traveled and worked on the road in my mid to late twenties, made a very good amount of money, and now I'm a senior PM with a power company in Colorado. I'm very happy with how my career opportunities have turned out so far.

Came here to say this. It’s typical fall back for engineering oriented people who don’t quite make it through engineering.

Overall, it’s a good degree for people who are interested in the Project Management or Construction industry. Should be able to find a job pretty easily in Louisiana and make very good money with a fair amount of upside if can move into upper management.

I know it’s a degree for baws too dumb to be engineers. And then they spend the rest of their life telling you why it’s like being an engineer but better. Even though it’s not.

It’s where engineers with actual people skills go.

I did it about 15 years ago. Curriculum was super easy but job opportunities and starting pay were great compared to the college workload

I’m in commercial project management now

Fantastic program with great industry support, tons of internship opportunities, and knowledgeable hands-on faculty that actually want to teach their students. It’s one of the best programs at LSU when it comes to what you get out of it verses what you put in.

I’m on the Construction Industry Advisory Council for LSU. We do a lot of outreach stuff to help out students and the department. Make sure he joins CSA (construction student association) and does the mentor program. Go on field trips, go to the socials, build a network, meet lots of people. It’s a solid program

If he wants to make real money right out of school, focus on industrial and get internships

Jim Bernhard (Shaw Group) became a billionaire with a LSU CM degree, so it has some potential.
