My last flight, I had the lasagna. So I was able to help the passengers with any medical conditions. We had an ole Vietnam vet baw that went to the funny farm that was still heartbroken over a stewardess. He was able to land the plane, but we ran off the runway in Chicago.

I have been working on aircraft avionics for almost 30 years now. Without a doubt I could.

I’m a low time private pilot. I would damn sure give it my best, but I highly doubt I could. The energy management required to do it I don’t think I could understand. One thing is for sure though, I would fly it all the way to the scene of the crash.

It’s a distinct possibility, but probably not. I just have my private license (not current) it would be one helluva landing

Yep

(Commercial, multi-, IFR and CFI ratings)

Biggest thing I've landed is a King Air but I could probably get it done. May not be an Okay 3-wire pass, though.

I think Mythbusters did this.

One time they did a sim run on their own. The next time they did it being talked down by a pilot. Both were successful with the pilot help

Im gonna try to put her down right at the edge of the pavement, so I can use all of the runway.
And I'm coming in nose high, because if I save one arse, I want it to be mine.

Washington Post had an article about this, and there was another article where they tested people in a simulator with guidance from a pilot (if they could figure out the radio or even remember/know to put on the headset). It was fairly disastrous for most unless they had decent flight experience.

quote:

Picture this: You are on a flight when you learn that the pilots have fallen ill and can no longer fly the plane. A voice comes over the public address system, asking for a volunteer to help land the aircraft. You have no experience, but you have seen “Airplane!” and “Snakes on a Plane.” Maybe you’ve frittered away hours on Microsoft Flight Simulator. You throw off your seat belt and march toward the cockpit, your cape rustling behind you. Hold on, hero. You might want to return to your seat for this reality check.

“There is a zero percent chance of someone pulling that off,” said Patrick Smith, a commercial air pilot and founder of the Ask the Pilot blog. “Do people think they can perform transplant surgery? No. Then why do they think they can land a plane?”

The clinical name for this type of baseless bravado is the Dunning-Kruger effect. It could be used to explain the results of a YouGov poll conducted in January. Out of 20,063 adults surveyed in the United States, nearly a third said they were “somewhat confident” or “very confident” that they could safely land a passenger airplane in an emergency, relying only on the assistance of air traffic control. Almost half of the men who responded were confident they could do it, compared with 20 percent of the women.

Think you can land a plane in an emergency? Pilots explain why you can’t.

Think you can land a plane? We put average people to the test.

I could control it all the way to the site of the crash.
