Yeah they definitely didn’t do him any favors. Sumlin/Kingsbury deserve some blame here too.

I think this, as well as his parents, weren’t a big enough focus in the doc. There should have been some serious heat and pressure put on those 4 in enabling Manziel’s behavior. They certainly didn’t pull any punches on blaming his friend. But as soon as the Dad said HE was the disciplinarian, I knew Johnny was fricked

Dad clearly didn’t discipline him at all and his Mom babied the shite out of him. Then they blame Sumlin and Kliff for doing the SAME frickING THING by babying him to keep him happy and to keep him playing. Kliff seemed slightly regretful but the doc didn’t push hard enough on that. While the parents deserve a large portion of blame, so do Kliff and Sumlim for not doing shite to help that kid out after him getting arrested and showing up hungover as frick to practice multiple times

Right, at the highest levels, you can only half-arse it for so long.

The amount of work Kobe put in was incredible, same with Garnett. They had 100 million + and kept grinding. LeBron is the same way after his first few years. Durant…nothing needs to be said.

Manziel liked football but loved the status. And unless you are a singer, rapper, or actor, half-assing your chosen field and relishing the fame and parties will only get to a certain point.

He should have went 1-1 against LSU. Our placekicker in 2012(Bertolet) was trash that game and left 7 points off of the scoreboard.

2013 y'all just smashed us in BR. No excuses from me on that one.

How they just made up the lie he comes from oil money and then the next clip is skip bayless and the talking heads on tv repeating it was pretty funny. His buddy handled that situation well.

Incredible work by his friend to get all the people in on this narrative up until this doc came out. They got into some trouble but he should’ve kept the friend around

i remember that "Uncle Nate" character from back in those days was seen as the villain in the whole tale, at least from texags perspective. he comes across as sympathetic in the documentary, but back then he was seen as a large part of the problem. of course, this evaluation was being made by the collective think tank of billy liucci's merry men, so who knows.

There is a really detailed article from Tim Burke (the guy who uncovered the Manti Teo hoax) and Manziel really does have a bit of an oil background, but it’s not very much, and it’s from a century ago.

The great grandfather was a bit of a scam artist and had some oil deals that may not have been legitimate but if I remember correctly, he lost some of it in lawsuits and spent the rest on real estate investments (many of which didn’t work out).

It’s been a while, but the Manziels are by no means poor but there are so many shady things they’ve done for decades.

If I remember correctly, every man in the Manziel bloodline has been to jail except for one guy, and then there is Manziel’s dad who has one or two very minor charges, related to disturbing the peace for a drunken party.

The grandpa went to jail for tax fraud or something as well, for a couple of years.

The Tim Burke article is super detailed and I’ll try to find it, he’s the exact opposite of a lazy guy who just takes every thing at face value.

So I’m thinking “Uncle” Nate knew some of this and just ran with it, and all of the media bought it except for Tim Burke

If I remember correctly, Manziel’s dad had a car dealership in Tyler

I found the doc to be sloppy, all over the place, and still "untold". They never really honed in on any thing specific. It was as if Manzeil himself produced and edited it. They left a lot of questions unanswered and no where near the quality of prior "Untold" episodes I have watched.

Yeah it was ok but I didn't really learn much that wasn't already known

Guy missed an extra point, 33 yard field goal, and a 52 yard field goal.

If the guys makes the extra point and 33 yard field goal like he should have LSU still wins 24-23. You can't say A&M should have won a game based on a 52 yard field goal.

LSU was up 24-12 and gave up a garbage time TD in the 4th. Since we're if'ing it up if LSU doesn't play like shite that day they win comfortably.

Has the fact he lied about his family’s wealth been out there?

This was the most shocking thing to me. Manufacturing a false narrative of family wealth to basically cover up next level douchey behavior is just absurd! It was an extremely well crafted fabricated story though. I lived in Dallas at the time, and Dallas thrives on gossip around money, and not even 1 person that I know of ever sniffed out that story (at least not in my circles).

Watched it last night, it was ok, but man Johnny is a freaking meathead... The only thing I wonder is how many Texas A&M wins will now need to be vacated.

Yes, thanks. Just got done with work and was going to look for it.

I’m sure I got some details wrong but I think I remember the gist of what Burke found.

Watched last night.
Overall I thought it was a really good watch, without getting too deep into the moral/ethical/whatever issues. A lot of the 2012 run by JM/TAM was something I obviously knew of but wasn't following that closely, so it was interesting to see it summarized like that.

The doc is obviously sympathetic to JM and the Manziel clan; however, they all seemed pretty likeable and credible for the most part.

JM's input throughout was funny and forthright. I'm sure there's plenty more he could have owned up to, but he was cool talking about the issues raised.

LSU: Funny how they gloss over...no, totally ignore...the losses to LSU in 12 and 13, but I did notice some pro-LSU statements to imagery in there.

Loved the parts where they get into the jetsetting and partying JM and Nate were into. That's crazy shite. Dudes were all over the place. And how they got out of the autographing scandal.

Definitely a good watch for any fan of SEC football or interesting or crazy sports history stuff.

It’s like Cam Newton meets Jesse Pinkman. Doc was cool but I agree nothing we didn’t know other than the oil thing. Guy is like a CFB version of a rock band singer in the 80s, young with tons of money and rode the party lifestyle until his demise. Hope the Gator doc is better but will prob be just as shallow with Urban being involved.
