" gig

as I was nearing mandatory retirement age for my position my company made me an offer I couldn't refuse to stay on with them, it's a pretty cushy "retirement" gig that includes using my original date of hire vacation(almost 40 years,) that really makes it almost a part time job, I really enjoy it, keeps the brain engaged, and the money is pretty damn good, I'll probably milk this for quite a while

All you guys bailing out in your fifties, how the heck are you pulling off healthcare expenses? You all have military or gov't benefits?

I'm 56 and have been tossing around the idea of quitting my job, but paying for health insurance for 9 years until medicare kicks in scares me from doing it.

healthcare expenses

definitely a major factor in the decision to leave early

some guys, if they don't have Tricare, will pick a desired retirement age and maybe tack on a year or so with the income budgeted strictly for this

If you plan properly you can get subsidized obamacare plans for cheap as hell.

I worked for 38 years, from 1982 to 2020. Changed jobs three times (should have stayed with my original employer). Never in those years was I without a job.

I retired from a 17 year career at 42.

I did take up a retirement job to combat boredom though:

Retired 4 years ago at 64 after 35 years of teaching and coaching. The following Monday I went to work part-time three days a week because I knew I couldn’t sit around and do nothing. Happy and playing golf two to three times a week.

33 years with Shell Oil/Chemical. Retired at the age of 54 with a pension and post retirement health insurance. The key to retiring early is to be debt free. No mortgage and vehicles paid for. It doesn’t take as much money as you think to live that way.

22 years in the Army and Army National Guard, retired when I was 40. When I got in the National Guard I went to work in law enforcement. I have 22 years in that and honestly, I'm at the point now where 3 bad days in a row and I'm out. If I can't make it on 2 pensions, then I can't make it at all.

Nice job .

Youngest retired guy i know did it at 35.. but, he had a major advantage since he inherited a family business, which he then sold for millions .
