I caught this on a highlight and not live and l think it's positive.

Our defense this year obviously is horrible for so many reasons. Above all else they don't seem to be animated or pissed off. They just get run over and hang their heads. They don't even seem to get mad at each other which is very concerning. Total lack of emotion period. But.......

When Mizzou scored that rush TD when our DLine was busy pointing at the Mizzou linemen for flinching out his stance, Major Burns had grabbed the RB right around the one yard line around the hips. Burns was still attempting to hold him out of the end zone. The RB then slipped his grasp and plowed into Zy Alexanders #24 and scored. Zy didn't even put any effort into stopping him. He just let him run through him. After the play Burns shoved Zy in the chest and was visibly pissed off as he shouted something in Zys face. IMHO that split second when Burns had the RB around his hips Zy could have cracked him or thudded into him and possibly kept him from scoring. But he didn't. That is the issue with this defense. The fact that someone (Burns) finally got pissed off and got in his teammates face about it kinda is a good sign. You never give up on a play. You never know what could happen. Would Zy have pushed the RB backwards at the goalline? Maybe...maybe not. The fact of the matter is he chose to put in no effort and got ran through. Burns seemed to let him have it. This small glimmer of emotion and frustration is positive. Some of these Defensive players especially the DBs need to wake up and get their s*** together! This defense is finally showing some emotion and getting after each other for lack of effort. That's exactly what we need moving forward.

DBs have been clueless where the ball is at any time. Never seen anything like it. We just react afterward.

Defense also plays on its heels, very non aggressive and slow to react. Players don't seem to feel free to make plays.

There are a select few on this defense who are legitimately afraid of contact.

Sage Ryan standing around and watching other players finish tackles pisses me off beyond measure.

I saw this and noticed it as well. I thought the same thing.
And on that note, there were other signs like this throughout the second half where players on the defense showed some life.
One was after Masson Smith got his first sack of the year.. that really seemed to bring some fire out of the guys.

Hopefully you’re right and this is a sign of things to come. Some ACCOUNTABILITY AMONG BROTHERS!!
Brotherly accountability is a strong force when used appropriately.

Also, that fire is going to be a NECESSITY moving forward.
Auburn is going to bring a lot of physicality in the run game and LSU is going to have to be ready mentally for that.
And after Auburn, Alabama Florida and A&M will bring just as much physicality.

This is definitely the time to turn up the heat. I think they can do it.
If Defense steps up and this is a hell of a ball team we have.

Burns is BY FAR the biggest vocal leader on the defense. The problem is that he’s sucked just as bad as the rest of them. Can’t chew your teammates’ arse when you’re getting torched for touchdowns your damn self. Maybe his pick 6 can turn that around a bit. Give him a little authority.

That’s why I completely disagree with the people saying he should have gone down. It may have been the smart “football play” in the micro, but in the macro, this defense needed something to make them
feel good about themselves moving forward. The % chance of us winning might have gone from 98 to 97 when he housed it. But whatever the difference was, it was exponentially more important for the psyche of the defense for him to score. If we lose a 10-point lead with under 3 minutes to go, that’s on the coaches. You make a pick on the 12 after giving up 39 and there’s nothing but grass between you and the end zone, you take it to the house, young man, and let them deal with the rest.

Hopefully he—and the rest of the D—can take that win and build upon it.

Lack of effort. Scared to hit somebody. LSU's very own Brandon Taylor spoke about this after the Ole Miss game. Preston Guy from Tigerbait also saw this as our glaring weakness in his film review after Ole Miss. We need guys who want to hit, who want to smack the shite out of people. I remember those old DBs like Eric Reid, Tyrann Mathieu, Craig Loston, Jamal Adams, etc, that weren't afraid to get all up in your shite.

Another thing that kills me is that our DBs NEVER look back for the ball when their defending somebody. We don't have guys out there trying to make a play when they are on tight coverage. All we need is one guy. One guy can make an entire unit look better just by doing his job.

It's hard to react quick and aggressively if you aren't sure of what is going on, especially with something as intense as football.

I remember seeing Burns tear into him. First time I’ve seen it all season. Seemed like a small positive in the defense. We went on to get a stop and the Burns pick 6. Throughout the whole second half the whole bench, especially the defense, erupted anytime they had a positive play stopping Mizzou. Great to see them reacting that way. Let’s hope they ride that momentum into the Auburn game.

This defense is historically bad. It's not going to flip a switch and suddenly become good in 2023 mid-season. We just need it to make a few minor technique adjustments, more hustle, maybe create a few more turnovers, and give up 7-10 less points than they have been. It is what it is this season. We will need to score 30+ in the rest of our SEC games to win.

It’s a combination of players that aren’t tier one SEC caliber like we have been accustomed to in the past. With the exception of Harris none of those guys possess elite talent in the back 7. Weeks and Perk look fast but Penn is not. The second killer is Houses complex zone schemes. Which people will argue we need because we can’t cover man to man. It’s obvious these guys are thinking way too much in zone which takes away aggression and leads to busted coverages for big gains.

Just because someone is a 5 or 4 star doesn't mean they are a dog! In fact many 4 or 5 stars have always had better natural talent and don't need to fight. Many of the 3 stars know that desire and effort have to make up for lack of natural talent and they are dogs. (i.e. Jacob Hester and the Honey Badger)

Zy is a major disappointment, and his play throughout the game was littered with half-hearted attempts to make plays. He shouldn't be starting
