What is the best current option out there to buy for a Xmas present for the family?

Get an Atari Gamestation Pro, a memory card, a lot of NES roms, and a better joystick.

You could get a emulation device specifically for older games, or do what I did. Picked up a playstation 3 for like 100 bucks, you can soft mod it meaning all you need is like a flashdrive. You can just download a nes emulator onto the ps3 and dump your roms into it. Moding ps3 is great because you can just dump the whole ps store onto it and all of your old roms.

Go on Etsy and either search emulators or NES Classic if you really want that form factor. tons of options for others.

Here is modded NES Classic with hundreds of games LINK

Plenty of Chinese options out there. If you have a need for a switch I belive you can get access to the full library through that as well

While I have switch online because my cousin decided to buy a family plan and said I could join his, I wouldn't recommend going out of your way. The library itself is not very full and for what your paying for the emulators don't even run great and its overpriced. Get a permanent emulation device that runs better, and doesn't keep burning your pockets. And plus once Nintendo servers go down you no longer have access.

as other have said, if its for replay and walk down nostalgia lane an emulator device is the way to go.

if you want to get them an actually real deal thing as more of a cool thing to have then probably your best bet is still things like ebay. other good option is find your local card game/comic book store. a lot of them dabble in old game and game consoles and they could have one.

just remember most modern displays wont have the right hook ups for an nes and even after adapting its going to look like poop more than likely.

I like collecting ps2 games so yes ebay and like yardsales are your best bet for older games. I understand liking to play on original hardware but if you just wanna play the games and don't care get a emulation device. If you do buy the actual games DO NOT use websites like DK oldies. They hike up prices like crazy and the quality of what you get is terrible. Worse than when gamestop refurbishes your things.

Thanks for all the answers. With the emulators, do you need to be tech savvy to operate them? If there are instructions, then I can follow. Do they ever brick out or anything?

I mean there are youtube tutorials for everything, so I mean not really. A ps3 in my opinion would be your best bet (a ps3 slim in particular) because you can do alot more than just normal nintendo emulating with it. You can upload retroarch to your ps3 (with softmodding) that should help. But yes there are instructions to do it all, I'll send a link. ps3 hen tutorial

I would contact the seller and ask any questions you have. Any seller worth a damn will respond. I have 3 modded consoles (NES Classic. SNES Classic and PS1 Classic) that I bought off Etsy and EBAY they all came with simple instructions and work pretty much flawlessly I say pretty much because there may be one of two games out of hundreds that wont load. You may have to change emulator cores to find the one that works on some titles but that is just a few clicks. I ve never had one brick.
I ve messed around with emulation on PC and Android and gotten some viruses from ROMs but I blame myself for those issues.

Allow me to present a different option:

Get an actual NES and an Everdrive. That way you can play on original hardware but have all your games on an SD card that goes in a cartridge.

Tethered 6' from the console? No thanks. I love me some retro gaming, but the advent of wireless controllers was a godsend.

I used to be able to whip Tyson when I was a kid. Not too long ago, I fired this up on an emulator to see if I could still do it. Took me about 30 tries of getting my arse kicked before I finally got him.

NES emulators are very easy to run. Most can be loaded onto tablets, phones, PC/laptop, etc. If you don't mind doing the setup, you more than likely already have the devices around the house and can be playing within 20 minutes instead of buying an emulator device from a 3rd party.

Same goes for Atari, SNES, Genesis systems. N64 setup is just as easy but some games won't run well on certain devices. And there are extra steps involved once you get to the disc generations. But Atari - SNES/Genesis can all be set up easily on practically any device and the entire library plays easily.

I run alot of ps1/ps2 emulators on my gaming laptop and phone. Even on a cellphone ps2 games can run alright, depends on game and the hardware.
