Automation was going to happen no matter what. The only difference is McDonald's now has an excuse.

McD’s opened a fully automated restaurant end of last year. They’re preparing for massive layoffs to automate everything possible. This is the ramifications of minimum wage increases

The bad part of this will be as this happens more and more it will dump a shite ton of unskilled labor that will find it difficult to find work. So you’ll end up with more welfare recipients and higher crime.

Same thing happened in the Ms Delta when farming mechanized to the point you can farm 1000s of acres with a handful of people, on top of the textile mills and cotton gins shutting down. All the black workers who had steady employment lost good jobs and now sit around on welfare, and it’s destroyed these communities.

And to top it all off, we are allowing millions more unskilled workers to flood across the border. It’s a recipe for economic disaster when the nation is already in a debt crisis. We cannot afford more dependents and less tax payers

In European McDonalds, the ordering kiosks are everywhere and have almost totally replaced the cashiers.

It's like they don't want you to see when the minimum wage workers are spitting in your food.

I don't mind the kiosks because they actually listen.

These wheels have been in motion for a long time. They started putting kiosks in McDs in 2015, but they started testing them out 20 years ago. Personally, I don't give a shite about whether it's automated or not. I have small kids and we grab happy meals occasionally while on the road. I'll use the app b/c it saves a few bucks and I don't have to worry about some min wage worker hearing me correctly over a shitty drive thru comm. Maybe this motivated McDs to speed up the process, but I think it's more likely that it opened the door for them.

Pretty much.

The lobby being shut down for roughly 2 years meant they could push the app hard and then remodel to focus on kiosks / online orders rather than face to face orders.

If you aren’t having to use front line workers at the counter, you either have more working the window / food prep or you can just have fewer workers on a shift.

Theyre not. They just understand that unskilled, uneducated workers have no future because of automation.

If you actually cared for these folks, you would encourage them to do better.

"European McDonalds": Mark Cuban predicted this several yrs ago. Stopped at one last summer in Vegas & there were only 2 humans. Mgr said that this was the plan for all franchises within the next yr. Calif. will get slammed with its new state law raising the minimum wage to either $18 or $20 an hour. Its Restaurant arse. is estimating that as many as a third of its older franchises will close as they won't be able to afford moderation & the high prices will keep customers away.

I was at their national meeting last year.

They are. Big time. First pilot of it kicked off in DFW some months ago in fact.

Another thing they are exploring is downsizing physical locations into ghost kitchens and doing automated drone delivery.

They are even automating management for what little staff they are keeping. You interview with a person, but an AI listening is the one that really makes the call.

I’m not looking forward to when they start licensing that out to others.

McDonalds is a real estate company that sells hamburgers.

They have always been smart with location and everything else, and people will always love Big Macs. They’ll be fine.
