I'm slowly looking as well. The mid size seems more practical to me than a full size, but I'm also liking the mid size SUV I have now. 3rd row, everything fits, nothing gets rained on. But it'll be what the girl drives soon, and I can get something else for me. I like the Frontier pro4xd trim, haven't driven it though. Prices on that one are nice.

Just over a year now, and no complaints so far. Lost a ton of cab room coming from an F150, but now I just put stuff in the bed under the cover.

If you buy a frontier. You better not read reviews first. They are not good

The other thing to do is to have your son test drive either

I had great luck with Gen 2 Nissan Frontier 4x4. 4.0 L V6 burns gas on the bad side on the good side is a very reliable engine. They fixed the timing chain issues that the Gen 1’s had.

My only Nissan I hated was 1995 4x4 3.0 V6 had the strawberry issue. The radiator and trans cooler were connected. If the connections failed you got coolant going into the transmission cooler. Destroyed the transmission. They fixed it under warranty no issues.

Unless you get the desert runner package or Pro-X they ride rough. 4x2’s if you change the shocks to a stiffer shock like a Blisten 4600’s or similar they ride better.

I have a 2018 Nissan 4x4 lifted.
Rides a lot better than Oem.

My only beef with Nissan is there are less aftermarket options for sprucing up the truck vs Toyota.

I have a 2014 Tacoma that I bought new with 309,000 miles, runs and drives like new. Mobil 1 every 6000 or 7000 miles.

Yeah it's annoying.

A set of dirt king UCAs and either 6100s or 8100s go a long way to making the tacoma and frontiers better riding.

The GM stuff rides better, but their bushings, shocks, and steering components don't hold up as well as they should.

The problem is, a young guy is going to be incredibly rough on things.

Just make sure if you buy the Tacoma to get the 6ft bed NOT the short bed!

Truck for my son. I've just about narrowed it down to a 2020-2023 Colorado or Tacoma

Tacoma. It’s honestly funny for someone to even be cross shopping these two vehicles. One is a turd, and one is the best selling small truck with highest resale.

Get the V6. It has a timing chain (not a belt). It’s not fast but it can get out of its own way and will last forever.

V6 4wd Tacoma with KO2 all terrains gets 18 mpg in the city. You could probably stay in the 20mpg range with paw paw tires.

I had a 2021 with V6 and 6 speed manual. Factory itires and wheels.

15 city and 19 hwy was best it ever gave me. I do not have a lead foot.

Guy on youtube, Scotty Kilmer, has said the new Toyotas with 4cyl could be trouble - to squeeze power out of it there's going to be a tradeoff with reliability and maintenance costs. V6 is known to be very reliable.

I'd stay away from GM until they either get their shite together or go bankrupt.

2019 Taco 4x4/Utility Package owner….

Get a Taco.

Also, I should make note that I had made a concern known to the local Toyota dealer about acceleration and maintaining speeds between a 4cyl and 6cyl. They basically said both engines are “dogs” when it comes to both, but they’re also equally as reliable. The 4cyl is much easier to work on and access hard to reach parts compared to the 6cyl but that’s not something k worry about since the dealership does all that for me.

Never understood the lure and a truck that can’t tow, horrible mpg, seats on the floor and cramped interior with a ridiculous price tag.
Seat for every arse I guess
