Outside of a few select Texas schools, this isn’t true anymore - especially since Covid and the mass illegal immigration since then. Plus the education standards in Texas are surprisingly low, even compared with those in Louisiana.

Quality of parents and kids is the conspiracy. Most of the good ones stay away from public schools thus ensuring our public schools will always suck. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
With that said, my kids are in private schools!

Why won't some parents selflessly think of the "poor public schools" and doom their children's future to make a point? Bunch of assholes only trying to do what's best for their own children instead of condemning their kids... How dare they!
I've heard of sacrificing to do what's best for our children, not sacrificing our children to do what's best for our bloated government, but i'm not a marxist either.

I think it depends on your child. I attended both public and private schools as a child. I taught for seemingly ever, both in public and private schools. I think there is the opportunity for your child to be challenged academically at both public and private. Does your child have a IEP or any type of special needs that cannot be addressed in the private realm? Does your child need transportation? What about sports teams? Required parent volunteer hours? At a private school, are you, as parents, comfortable with the doctrine/philosophy/teaching model adopted by the school? I suggest going to visit a school and get a feel for the dynamic...The fact that you've asked the question tells me that you will make the right choice. Blessings!

I went to private k-8. Then, I went to public 9-12. The public school kids didn’t have enough money for drugs more than crappy weed. The private school kids had all of the hard drugs.

I’ve known great parents that sent their kids to private, and great parents that sent their kids to public.
Their kids, regardless of the school that they attended, have all become quite successful as adults. Then again, the public schools here are pretty solid, with some of them being excellent.
However, there is no way that what I wrote holds up in Orleans or East Baton Rouge (unless we are talking about academic based magnet / STEM schools).
That’s why I said where you live plays a role.
It’s also why I said that private school is almost always the way to go in Louisiana…almost.

If a thread last more than 2 pages, expect a bunch of stupid takes on here. There's literally people on here that blame Texas having a good job market as to why Louisiana is struggling economically, not decades of poor voting habits and bad public policy.

Cruised through the world's shittiest rural high school with straight A's.
Stayed out of trouble by playing school sports. Got good SATs.
Got accepted to snotty colleges. Graduated from the snottiest one on my list.
Wish I'd gone to a less snotty state university.

When I coached baseball at the local playground it took 5 minutes to pick out the public school kids. Some had hot single moms which made the team swimming parties much more fun. And the hot moms will do anything to get their punk kids on the field.

In watching kids over the years, I don't think it makes nearly the difference that people want to think it does. Looking at friends I grew up with, my kids (grow up) and their friends, kids that are smart and achievers do well no matter where they go

We are in Texas and have high rated public schools through middle school in our district. We plan on switching to private after elementary.
